Dear All, This edition of MATTO Matters mainly focuses on life sciences events and activities going on in the state. This vibrant sector has continued to make Massachusetts the global leader in the discovery and development of new drugs and devices to solve major health problems. We hope to see you at one of the many events focused on the life sciences this month so you can learn more about life science advances taking place locally and globally.

Funding Opportunities |
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center funding opportunities:
The MLSC announces the launch of the fourth round of an open solicitation for capital dollars. The MLSCsupport life-sciences related capital projects for academic/research institutions (including 2- and 4-year colleges and universities), business incubators, and other not-for-profit organizations across the Commonwealth. The MLSC is interested in investing in high potential economic development projects that promise to make a significant contribution to the state's life sciences ecosystem. The MLSC has allocated up to $35 million in capital dollars for this open solicitation.
Applicants will have until 12:00 pm on Friday, September 26, 2014 to submit their completed application.

Life Sciences International Collaborative Industry Program (ICIP): Please visit the MLSC website to learn more and apply. Applications are to be completed and submitted no later than October 1, 2014 at 10AM. Tax Incentive Program The Life Sciences Initiative authorizes the MLSC to award up to $25 million in tax incentives each year. The primary goal of the program is to incentivize life sciences companies to create new long-term jobs in Massachusetts. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis via the MLSC website up until the deadline of October 23, 2014, at noon.
NCIIA Upcoming submission deadline: November 7, 2014 The E-Team Program provides early-stage support and funding of up to $75,000 for collegiate entrepreneurs working on market-based technology inventions. Faculty grants available: Course and Program grants strengthen existing curricular programs and/or build new courses and programs in invention, innovation, and technology entrepreneurship. Students and faculty from NCIIA member institutions (US-based colleges and universities) are welcome to apply.
GlaxoSmithKline bases new VC fund at One Broadway in Kendall Sq GlaxoSmithKline's new $50 million venture capital fund will be based out of the One Broadway building in Cambridge's Kendall Square, inside an office of SR One, the drug giant's corporate VC arm, a GSK spokesperson said. Startups in the emerging field of bioelectronics - which involves medicine that "speaks the electrical language of our body" - will be the focus of investments out of the new fund. Read more

Massachusetts life science firms on track to double last year's record IPO count
This year has seen 13 biotechs go public already in the state since January, breaking last year's record of nine. Another seven companies - see below - have filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission. If all seven of those companies hold IPOs before the end of the year, that would double last year's record and raise an estimated $1.5 billion. Read more
- ReWalk is developing robotic legs to help paraplegics can walk again. The Israeli-based company has 63 employees, 19 of which are in its Marlborough offices.
- Lantheus Medical in Billerica, a 500-employee company that makes agents used in medical imaging.
- Civitas Therapeutics in Chelsea - a spin-off from Bob Langer's Lab at MIT, is working on a potential treatment for Parkinson's disease which has completed mid-stage trials.
- rEVO Biologics in Framingham, the 17-employee firm has developed ATryn, which was approved in 2009 to treat hereditary anti-thrombin deficient patients and is now seeking wider approval of the drug for treating preeclampsia.
- Tokai Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, the 17-employee biotech has a drug in Phase 2 trials for prostate cancer based on technology licensed from the University of Maryland-Baltimore.
- Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, a three-employee company developing drugs to treat obesity, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders and has completed Phase 2 trials.
- Eyegate Pharmaceuticals in Waltham, which is developing a device and drugs to treat eye diseases. The four-employee company has completed the first of two pivotal trials of a drug for anterior uveitis.

The EntreTech Forum: Healthcare Analytics - The ROI Conundrum When: Tuesday, September 16, 2014 6:30 - 9:30 pm Where: Constant Contact, Reservoir Place, 1601 Trapelo Road, Waltham, MA 02451 The US healthcare industry is evolving its use of healthcare data, including data collection (EMR/EHR), data sharing (via health information exchanges) and data analysis.
