 | Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week. |

Look at this sketch. Can the person who did this draw?
What about the person who did THIS?
There are folks who might see these and dismiss them as absurd, saying things like "my three-year old can do better than that." The irony here is that these two artists were willing to capture their initial ideas as if coming from a child. Untainted, non-rationalized, pure visual and perceptive response to whatever caught their interest and wouldn't let go.
The most inhibiting thing we do as artists is censor ourselves, constantly judging every mark we make, often holding back on some "far out" idea, fearful of being found lacking by fellow artists, afraid of losing clientele. We cling too tightly to what feels safe. But really, only when we can let go and respond without judgment can our full creative potential sprout forth.
Oh, by the way: the first drawing is by Andrew Wyeth, the second by Michelangelo.
___ In answer to your requests, I am focusing a series of Quick Tips on drawing without rules, or awakening the right side of the brain so that drawing becomes enticing and second nature to you. This week's Quick Tip shows you an exercise that can train your eye to follow shapes, keeping in mind that your hand WILL follow your eye.
