Do you see the sore thumb in this painting?
Alignment. Notice how all the little rapids are in a vertical row, causing a vertical line right down the middle of the painting. It's a common error, but disconcerting nonetheless.
Notice the difference in the painting's balance when those little rapids are staggered.
TIP: Sore thumbs of various sorts can crop up in our paintings if we're not paying attention. Vertical alignment of similar images is one of those. By offsetting alignment of images similar to one another, we can give the painting stronger balance as well as create an intriguing visual path for the eye to follow.
