What makes this color
turn to this color
when I do this?
Wait. Don't answer that yet. Just hold that thought because the answer is the same as to--
What happens when this
and this
appear together like this?
The answer? A principle of composition has acted. Another way to say it--cause and effect has happened. A warm mixed with a cool warms the cool. A vertical counter-balances a horizontal. Both cause and effect. Both integral components of compositional principles.
So, does knowing this help or hurt us as artists? Does knowing this restrict us or open up possibilities for us?
TIP: We allow ourselves to be restricted by composing principles when we think of them as rules we must follow. But if we use them for results to cause something to happen (rather than allow them to use us as minions), we open doors to unlimited freedom in our painting.
Happy painting,
Dianne
___ Yesterday we launched our FIFTH FRIDAY FEATURE. This two-hour demonstration lesson combines the principles taught in Series One through Four. Whereas the regular lessons use studies and vignettes, this one takes the painting very close to the finish line.
___ This week's YouTube Quick Tip shows how I photograph paintings. If you'd like me to do a video Quick Tip on anything related to painting or composing, email your request HERE. I have put on our eStore a PDF outlining my approach to photographing paintings. You can download it free HERE.___At our eStore, we keep a collection of free things for you to download. Scroll down to the Video Supplements section and take a look. You will notice that now you can watch the Notan video lesson on the site or on the YouTube channel. You no longer have to download it.
