Look at this photo of a daffodil.
Just within the flower and its stem, what colors do you see?
Yellow is obvious, But what other colors are you seeing?
Allow your attention to zoom in beyond to total flower to each minuscule part. Count the colors.
Did you find at least ten?
Did you find all of these?
The word color includes hue, value, intensity and temperature. So to read color as a whole, we acknowledge a different color with every change in hue, value, intensity or temperature. Hue is the key element of color that when mixed with another hue causes all color elements to change.
What we see represented in that one little daffodil contains mixtures from within the full spectrum of hues. Think about the primary hues--yellow, red & blue. Can you think of any color that doesn't have at least one of the primaries in it? Bet you can't.
Now notice how within that daffodil, you see some yellow mixed with red, some yellow mixed with blue and some mixed with both red and blue. Yellow is the prevailing hue, but we need all the other elements of color to interpret the image of this jonquil.
Tip: A good way to create a color we see is to first name the hue you perceive, then ask does it have red in it? Or does it have blue in it? Or does it have yellow in it? After these, then ask does it needs more light or more dark? Your eyes will give you the answer. Mixing the colors we see comes down to asking the right questions.
In this week's video, I show how we can read for mixing reds, yellows and blacks (black playing the role of blue) to study a blackeyed susan.
Happy painting,
Dianne
