Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week.

What is bothersome about the placement in each of these images?

Where we place our images influences the messages they communicate, even if unconsciously.
  • A subject placed right in the center of the format, like image A,  might communicate boredom or give one a ho-hum feeling.
  • Having the negative space the same width as the positive space, like image B, might communicate ambiguity or indifference.
  • Locating the front side of the subject too close to the edge, as in image C, might create uneasiness or discomfort.
  • Placing the image too close to the format's edge, like B and C, creates the discomfort of feeling boxed in.
Tip:  The ability to work with relationships--what elements do to one another--is one of the most important skills an artist needs.  Just as for music the space between the notes creates the life of the piece, the intervals among visual images and amid their format's edges play a substantial role in the import of an art work.

My intention for the placement of this female cardinal was to create anticipation.
