Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week.

What limited palette of colors would interpret this fall scene?

The above set of colors looks entirely possible, but what about this one?

Scales of Quinacridone Violet, Hansa Yellow, Ivory Black

Tip:  While a more vibrant black for painting is made of two transparent complements, using ivory black as one of three colors for a limited palette can yield some exciting results. Rather than being used to darken a value, black can be used to create new colors.
Here's a good way to begin exploring potential combinations of quinacridone violet, hansa yellow light and black.
First, for each of the three colors, create value scales (above) with white (or water, for watercolor painters.)  Note: With watercolor, white can be used to create these scales, giving you yet another set of options.
Second, create hue scales using combinations of two colors at a time.
Last, play with all three using random combinations until you explore a full range of color possibilities.
Random playing with the colors and white

Here's a section of the above scene juxtaposed with the random play.

All the colors you need are here, and more.

Black as a color mixed with other colors provides a harmonious palette while allowing many options for interpreting autumn colors.  Below is one of my interpretations from a similar limited palette using alizarin crimson rather than quinacridone violet.
