Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week.

What if I told you that the colors in this design are perfect for rendering a mountain stream of rushing water?  Would you believe it?

Here they are with with yellow-green and green-blue progressively reduced in intensity by adding their complement, and warm yellow raised in value by adding white.

Here is an excerpt of a painting where variations in value of the lower intensities are used along with the raised value of warm yellow.

And here is the painting from which the excerpt is taken.

"Rocks Stand Still"   Oil on Canvas

Tip:  By alternating neutralized versions of warm & cool analogous colors, we can communicate the sense of rushing water.  By highlighting these with the warmest color contained in the two analogous colors, we can communicate the light striking the water.
In this painting, yellow-green and green-blue are the analogous colors.  The warm color they have in common is yellow.  Neutralized versions of yellow-green and green-blue are placed in alternating strokes, slightly blended.
Warm yellow is lightened with white to add the accent of light.

In this case, the yellow-green and green-blue are derived from the reflections from the sky and surrounding foliage not shown in the painting.

Happy painting,
Dianne
