Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week.

May 10, 2014

Last week I introduced you to tangents, the space robbers of composing art work.  Not only do they rob space, but they steal edges as well.  In a sense, that too is a kind of space robbing.
What kind of robbery is happening here:

There are two.  Did you find them?  If not, take a look at this little sketch and have another go.

This is another thief that painters often overlook.   In the sketch, the tree is robbing the building's edge.  In the photo, there is a tree on either side of the cabin robbing the same kind of edge.

Tip:  Vertical images adjacent to other vertical images should either overlap in a place that allows a follow through of the image behind, or there should be space between them.

Here's a better rendition of the photo:

There is a third tangent of another kind where the small tree intersects the corner of the carport with house and porch roofs.  That tree would be best eliminated in a painting.

Happy painting,
Dianne

P. S.   On Monday, May 12 , watch for another group challenge on our Facebook forum.  Folks who participated had fun with last week's challenge.

P.P.S.  A Special Announcement will be coming to your mailbox soon!
