Composing and Drawing Tip of the Week.

What do the tune "Chopsticks" and this sketch have in common?

If you answered equal intervals, you got the point.  The space between images is just as important as the images themselves.  If we make those spaces too much the same size, we rob the images of their dynamics.  Let's change the spacing of the sketch above and notice the difference.

The same problem exists in this painting.

Notice in how many places the spaces between the images are the same size,   Adding to the problem, some of the images are the same size of the spaces between them.  I have pointed out a few of them with arrows.

Just as the tune "Chopsticks" can get on your nerves because of it's sameness in rhythm, a composition whose spaces are too much the same will feel boring and communicate a sense of wavering.

Now look at the difference with the spacing adjusted.  By moving that middle rock to the left, the space is varied so that the painting feels more dynamic.

Tip:  No matter what our skill level in painting, how we honor the varying of space between and within our images can be a major factor in the strength of our painting's composition.  Sometimes one simple adjustment can change the entire painting.

Happy painting,
Dianne

P. S.  Share with us on the Facebook forum one of your paintings in which you consciously varied the space between the images for a stronger composition.
