2013-2014 Fellows:

Dr. Parks and Dr. Torngren

Each year here at the clinic, two fellows are selected to participate in one-on-one mentorship for advanced training in the shoulder, elbow and hand reconstruction. They have the opportunity to evaluate and treat upper extremity conditions with four physicians in private practice with an academic emphasis. Fellows attend orthopedic teaching conferences, clinics, and participate in the clinic's journal clubs, open and arthroscopic surgery, anatomy labs, and industry sponsored workshops. They are expected to prepare publication-quality research involving clinical series and anatomical dissections and research projects.

The San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow, and Hand Clinic is honored to have the expertise of both Dr. Parks and Dr. Torngren for the 2013-2014 fellowship year!

  Di Lin Parks, MD

Dr. Di Parks grew up in Galveston, Texas. She attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where she obtained a bachelors degree in Biology. She then attended the University of Texas Medical Branch medical school from 2004 to 2008, and completed her orthopaedic residency training at John Peter Smith Hospital, in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Parks is currently completing a one-year fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow & Hand Clinic. She is married to Bernard Parks, who also grew up in Galveston, Texas. In her spare time, Dr. Parks enjoys the outdoors, running, cooking, and spending time with her family. She is a foodie, so she is looking forward to discovering the many food and wine options available in the Bay area.

 Travis Torngren, MD

Dr. Travis Torngren grew up in Idaho Falls , Idaho. He received an associates degree from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, and later attended Brigham Young Univeristy in Provo, Utah, where he received a bachelors degree in microbiology. He attended University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, Nevada from 2003-2007, and completed orthopedic residency in Memphis, Tennessee with the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic. He then completed a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is currently completing an additional fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the San Francisco Shoulder, Elbow & Hand Clinic. Patient Corner

"My shoulder was devastated in an industrial accident and misdiagnosed for six months. Then I went to Dr. James Kelly and after reviewing my MRI. I was on my way to recovery! Surgery went like a breeze: in and out in hours and his bedside manners are great as is the rest of his staff at the offices on Clay Street in San Francisco. I've been working out in gyms since I was 14 and Dr. Kelly has given me back that option. Thanks Doc!"

"I gotta hand it to Dr McCarroll; He's a brilliant hand and arm surgeon and expert! Many thanks to my friend who referred me. I have a recurring mucus cyst in my ring finger which develops from having osteoarthritis. The first doctor wanted to do surgery [...] I learned the truth from Dr McCarroll so that I could make an informed decision. This doctor saved me a lot of grief."

Consumers around the country began using coverage provided by the newhealth care law on Wednesday, the same day that Medicaid expanded to hundreds of thousands of people in about half the states. Many provisions of the 2010 health care law offering new benefits and protections to consumers, including those with pre-existing conditions, also took effect.

New Year, New You
By MARILYN TAM
- for the Huffington Post

A new year -- ah, a clean slate to start from. Wait, what is all that stuff following behind you? Old ideas, regrets, unresolved issues, physical and mental clutter, and maybe even some extra weight on your literal behind? A new you calls for a new approach. Releasing and discarding things and thoughts that no longer serve you will free you to be more productive, creative and happy.
