Congressman Sandy Levin Meets with Coalition Members
"I had a very insightful meeting with Community Anti-Drug Coalition leaders throughout Macomb and Oakland County. The challenges and pressures our youth face today are immense, and it's so important that we have these coalitions to educate and spread the message of substance abuse prevention to our youth and communities at large" - Congressman Sandy Levin, May 6, 2015

Coalitions Connect with Parents for Prom and Graduation Season
Each Spring, thousands of Oakland County high school seniors and their families begin the exciting process of preparing for prom and graduation celebrations. These celebrations often include alcohol, as well as more relaxed attitudes about underage consumption.
As a reminder of the dangers of underage drinking, and the legal problems that come with supplying youth with alcohol, prevention Coalitions throughout Oakland County prepare and mail information packets to high school students and their families. This year, many Coalitions have also included additional information about how adults can "teen proof" their homes to prevent the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
"Parents should also be thoughtful about the choices they and their children make," said Carol Mastroianni (Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition) in a recent interview. She explained that parents who excuse underage drinking in their home because they believe it's safer could be in major trouble with the law.

Coalitions Conduct Alcohol and Tobacco Vendor Education Visits
In continued efforts to keep harmful substances out of the hands of Oakland County youth, each year Coalition volunteers visit local alcohol and tobacco vendors to deliver packets with information they can use to prevent sales to minors. Included in the packets are tips for identifying fake IDs, birth date signs and window clings for display, and tips for training employees to comply with the law. For more information about the Synar Program (tobacco) visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration web page.
