Merchant's House Museum

29 East 4th Street

A haunted spot any day of the week, but check out their calendar of frightful events in October and November. From ghost stories to psychic talks and a funeral reenactment... I'm spooked just thinking about it!  I've been on their Candlelight Ghost Tour and I would certainly do it again - it's quite exciting. Just don't go alone!

The Ghosts of Greenwich Village Scavenger Hunt

Watson Adventures has a number of great NYC tours, but this one is especially eerie. With a flashlight in hand, you visit 'haunted' buildings and secret cemeteries while learning the stories of these ghosts; Mark Twain, Thomas Paine, and Edgar Allan Poe to name a few.

Visit some known-to-be-haunted spots...
The Merchant's House Museum is always the top of the list, but here are a few others:
  • One if by Land, Two if by Sea
    17 Barrow Street
Many believe the former Vice President, Aaron Burr, is the source of the paranormal activity-flickering lights and missing items in the restaurant, which is located in what was once his carriage house.

  • The Ear Inn
    326 Spring Street
Legend has it that this Irish tavern, housed in a nearly 200-year-old building, is haunted by a sailor named Mickey. (The seaman was apparently hit by a car and died outside the bar in the 1960s.) He's said to make his presence known by lighting the fireplace.
  • New Amsterdam Theater
    214 West 42nd Street
Legend has it that actress Olive Thomas stumbled out of the bathroom of a Parisian hotel, horrified by what she'd done, having accidentally ingested an entire bottle of mercury bichloride pills. Thomas' ghost crossed the Atlantic so that she could haunt the New Amsterdam, where she once acted. Workers and security guards have claimed to see Thomas walking backstage and throughout the halls of the theater, clutching a blue bottle of pills.
