Holiday season in New York - it's the most wonderful time of the year. The city is becoming a spectacular sight with Christmas trees, department store window displays, and other holiday attractions popping up around town.  Shop the seasonal markets and pop-ups in this week's Special Feature to find distinctive items for those on your list.

Two NYC shopping giants partner for the holiday season and kick it off with the showcasing of the signature tree at The Plaza (768 5th Avenue). The event benefits Volunteers of America

 
November 30 through December 30

Cocoa and Carols or Holiday Jazz Cruise

90 minute festive cruise on the Hudson to see all of NYC lights. Live music, beautiful views, and warm treats. 

   

December 2 Winters Eve at Lincoln Square    

Touted as the largest holiday festival.  Legendary folk artist Arlo Guthrie will perform.  Music food and dancing will entertain all.

 

December 5 Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Artisanal Show

Meet your favorite home and gift vendors, and sample gourmet tastings!

A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross to help the victims affected by the typhoon in the Philippines. 

 

December St. Jude Winter Gala
This is an event that is near and dear to me. The St. Jude Winter Gala exists through the funding of all of its supporters.  Reasonably priced at $125 per ticket, there will be music, dancing, cocktails, and tastings from many of the city's finest restaurants.
 

  

December 6  Adriana Trigiani Holiday Walking Tour

Part tour and part shopping experience as you explore some of the hidden wonders to get into the spirit and excitement of the season. Also December 8 and 13.

Through December 21  Who Have Arrived in Heaven
Located at David Zwirner Gallery, a contemporary art gallery located in Chelsea that recently relocated from SoHo. I especially enjoyed Kusama's exhibit, definitely thought-provoking.

Jefferson Hayman - The Heart Has Its Reasons

At the Robin Rice Gallery, Hayman's second solo photography exhibition at the gallery.  The photographs are handcrafted silver gelatin, pigment and platinum prints that feel timeless.

The Rock Paper Photo Holiday Pop-Up  

A fine art gallery of online iconic pop photos has opened a pop-up shop in Chelsea at Gallery 150 (132 West 18th Street). Now you can browse in person; the collection will transport you to historic moments in the entertainment industry.

 

Through January 5  Robert Indiana: Beyond Love 

Best known for his "LOVE" piece, you'll be pleasantly surprised by his many other works of pop art exhibited at The Whitney (945 Madison Avenue).  

 

The Morgan Library & Museum

I always enjoy the holidays at the Morgan. This weekend the museum will focus on a highlights tour of the existing collections, their unique holiday gifts, and both the Edgar Allen Poe and Leonardo da Vinci tours.  On Friday evening live music will add to the museum's festivities.

The yearly anticipated Nutcracker by Tschaikovsky opens at the David H. Koch Theater (20 Lincoln Center). I see the New York City Ballet's performance each year and this one will be no exception! Through January 4th.

Performing Songs I Wish I'd Written at 54 Below... a mixture of Broadway, pop, and jazz.

December 3 & 4  Born Liars
Preview at Theatre 80 includes aperitif, the preview of Born Liars with two other short plays, and a meet and greet with the founders of italytheater.

December 4  Alvin Ailey at NY City Center

December 10  Dust to Dust

Elizabeth Hess performs Dust to Dust to commemorate Human Rights Day, and the last day of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. 

A fundraiser for UN Women, it includes a wine reception and performance.

One of my favorite entertainers performs at Cafe Carlyle through New Years Eve. I have tickets on December 14th!

The old Bowery station is magically transformed into a holiday destination.  Artisanal housewares, and wreath-making classes will be taught by the Frankie Elizabeth boutique.   I heard that they're even displaying exquisite holiday table settings.
