Weekly Snapshot
It's the end of summer, but this week, tennis, football, and fashion are at the forefront! I've chosen to highlight Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in my Special Feature... while many shows and events are invite-only during the fashion-craze, I have include some great events open to the public.
And don't forget to peruse the films for the upcoming New York Film Festival September 27 through October 13 - tickets go on sale to the public this Sunday, September 8th.

Everyday Events...
Through September 9 US Open There are still matches left - visit the website for available tickets. September 7 5th Annual T.E.A.L. Walk/Run This 5K run through Prospect Park raises money for Ovarian Cancer - "Tell Every Amazing Lady about Ovarian Cancer" September 12 Sip for the Sea At the Central Park Zoo, The Wildlife Conservation Society hosts a fundraiser of sustainable wines and foods that will benefit the New York Aquarium as it recovers from Hurricane Sandy.
September 12 to 22 87th Annual Feast of San GennaroAn annual tradition in NYC, food vendors throughout Little Italy celebrating Italian culture.

Cultural Pursuits...
September 7 and 8 Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit Showcases fine artists and craft artisans from throughout the New York area. Through September 22 Fashion Jewelry: The Collection of Barbara Berger The Museum of Arts & Design displays over 450 pieces of exquisite fashion jewelry from Berger's collection... a sparkly treat for the eyes! Parts of the exhibit close on the 22nd, but the remainder is open through January. Through September 25 James Turrell James Turrell's first exhibit in a New York museum since 1980. Focusing on the artist's groundbreaking exploration of perception, light, color and space, the exhibit is at the Guggenheim Museum. Through September 28 Monte-Carlo Legends The Forbes Gallery features photos of international elite icons such as Cary Grant, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. This photography exhibit celebrates 150 years of timeless style.

Outside of the events below, visit the Jazz Gallery, a cool, intimate setting that has been voted by New York Magazine as the best jazz den in the city... one of my favorite casual spots for live music.

Brian D'Arcy James "Under the Influence"
D'Arcy, who starred as Debra Messing's husband in the TV show Smash, is also an accomplished singer and will be performing at 54 Below. I plan to go listen to him sing rock and roll tunes by such noted artists as Billy Joel and Phil Collins.
September 9 through October 8 Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival
At Dizzy's, the festival features up-and-coming musicians alongside jazz masters. Buy tickets for performers such as a Coltrane Tribute and Louis Hayes and the Jazz Communicators.
September 10 World Peace Orchestra Concert
Kevin Spacey will introduce the annual concert at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center; it brings together 130 young musicians from 50 countries.
September 10 through 28 Sutton Foster
One of my favorite Broadway performers, Sutton Foster, will be performing at Café Carlyle at the Carlyle Hotel.

September 8 Lower East Side Opening Night Art + FashionFashion shows and receptions at over 40 galleries will make this a great evening. Also, an Orchard Street Block Party! September 11 Film Screening: Bill Cunningham New YorkAt the New Museum's Sky Room, watch a screening of a documentary of photographer Bill Cunningham on fashion trends and high society soirées.The Allure Lounge The Empire Hotel will host a special lounge with complimentary express makeovers by Maybelline, along with hair styling by Dream Dry from 10am to 5pm daily from September 5-12. For the duration of Fashion Week, they are offering inspired menus that have been created by many designers. Carolina Herrera and Salvatore Ferragamo are two of my favorites taking part in this event. Also, there are exquisite mannequins on display that will feature the noted designers latest fashions.
