Weekly Snapshot... what to do over Labor Day weekend.

Hard to believe it's the last weekend of summer... but I don't see the city showing any signs of cool down.  I'm looking forward to September's events as that is my  favorite month of the year, a month that is often a continuation of summer!   

 

This week I didn't include a Special Feature since I combined everything to do this holiday weekend for those of you staying in the city.

August 31  Hester Street Fair's
Bedford + Bowery Bazaar

From Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn to the Island of Manhattan, Bedford and Bowery is throwing a bash. North Brooklyn restaurants, shops, artists and artisans will collaborate with the team at the Hester Street Fair on the Lower East Side.Don't miss Brooklyn Brewery's happy hour of free beer at 6:30pm.

US Open 
You can still get your tickets.  And here's some news... David Burke takes the US Open food up a few notches with his brisket sliders and chicken tenders.  I plan to sample these when I'm there for Monday's match. 

 

September 4  A Night for Green Beauty

This event kicks off  Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at the James Corbett Studio. Hosted by La Bella Figura, guests will enjoy all natural products including juices from Pressed Juicery and organic wines.  Express treatments by Joanna Vargas and her team are some of the special features of the night.     

 

 


September 5 to 12  Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 
Designers showcase their collections during the week long events in Lincoln Center... plenty of events for the fashionista.

Paley on Park Avenue

13 temporary sculptures by Albert Paley along Park Avenue from 52nd to 67th Streets. I've seen at least half of them already. On display through November.

Through December 1

Concentrates on the rise of Chinese American designers who made their marks in NYC.  Names including Anna Sui, Vera Wang and Vivienne Tam.

   

Shanghai Glamour: New Women 1910s-40s

Through November 3
This exhibit features Shanghai women and their fashionable dress in the early 20th century and how it represented the
seduction and mystery of the city.

Free festival at the Metropolitan Opera; a ten-day sequence of magnificent performances including The Tempest and Otello.

 

September 4 to 18  The Machine 

At the Park Avenue Armory, this theatrical thriller follows one of the greatest grandmasters of chess in the match of his life. 

  

September 5  The Glass Menagerie opens

Premiering at the Booth Theater on the 5th in previews, the creative team behind the Tony award winning show, Once, has produced this renowned play by Tennessee Williams.  This spellbinding new production stars one of my favorite Broadway stars, Cherry Jones.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

September 5  The Faces of the Moon opens

At The Public Theater, Mike Daisy, monologue master, will entertain you; a story told over the course of a lunar month, a new monologue every night, in 29 unique consecutive performances. Each performance is able to stand on its own and ends with a different monologue based on the magic of NYC.      

 

September 6  Julie Kathryn

If you like Norah Jones and Neil Young, you will enjoy Julie Kathryn at the Rockwood Music Hall. Her performance will feature the release of her current album. 

Saturdays  Bargemusic "Music in Motion" 

Weekly concerts featuring a one hour performance, followed by Q&A with the musicians.

September 6  Eataly's 3rd Birthday Party 
Purchase tickets for the 3rd birthday of one of my favorite markets... each ticket is $4 and will get you a specialty food item, wine, and many other of their specialties. Purchase ticket packets of 10, 20, or 30 tickets.  This Saturday, August 31st, visit Eataly for birthday cake!

Order tickets early for Taste Talks, a 2-day foodie event in Brooklyn on September 14th & 15th. The 15th includes an All-Star Cookout in Williamsburg. I plan to get tickets to that tasting menu.
