Did you know that there's one new year that gets celebrated, on average, every month of the year? Besides the Gregorian New Year which we're about to celebrate on Dec 31st, a number of religious new years - Chinese, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, Baha'I - are observed throughout the year. But, in terms of setting plans and making resolutions for our personal betterment, no other new year comes close to the one we're about to celebrate.
In this issue, I share with you why it's important to have a 'vision' of where you want to be and a plan for how to get there instead of just making a random 'resolution' that you may or may not follow through. I included tips to help you maximize the nutrients you absorb from the food you eat. I, also, created an easy-to-use food combining chart so that you can download it and hang it on your fridge.
To help me serve you better in 2015, I would be very appreciative if you could please take 2 minutes to fill out this very short survey http://ow.ly/GBpyA.
A very big "Welcome" to all of the new readers who have joined my newsletter list since last month! You're going to love the inspiration you will find here. Enjoy! If you know someone who suffers from chronic illness or is the parent of a child or young adult who suffers from chronic illness, please forward this newsletter to them. It is very rewarding to be able to share information with others, especially when that information can help change their lives for the better.
Finally, I wish you a very happy, healthy New Year! However you plan to welcome 2015, I hope that you have fun doing so in the company of family and friends.

Feature Article: Plan your Happy New Year!
The turn of the new year is such a big deal because we approach it with a sense of renewed hope! Most of us will make resolutions and hatch plans. Most will be broken.
Why do we break 'New Year' resolutions?
Because we set them in a hasty, non-committal manner, perhaps expecting that we will go to bed one night and wake up with just the right amount of discipline to put whatever we resolved to do into action - right off the bat, without preparing ourselves for the change.
A 'fresh' start
I love the idea of a fresh start and a clean slate but that fresh start does not happen overnight. It happens gradually and it usually takes energy and determination to take consistent action. That consistent action is what allows the shift - the fresh start - to happen.
For example, if I want to have toned muscles, I need to exercise consistently. I cannot expect to go to the gym for one hour every once in a blue moon and end up with a toned body.
I still remember with amazement what I was able to achieve in August 2010 with just a vision and a promise I made to myself in January of that year. In January 2010, I could hardly stand up straight. In fact, I was supporting myself against the kitchen counter while chatting to my mum on the phone. I told her then that I was going to be dancing at my brother's wedding in August. Did that vision come true? You bet! I danced the entire day and night. Was I able to achieve it by doing nothing? If I did nothing I would have still needed to support myself against something. I did a lot but I had to do it gradually. I had to relearn how to walk first, but I didn't let that stop me. I had a vision that kept me motivated.
My point is, a fresh start needs to go hand in hand with a vision of who, where or what we want to be in X number of months. I want to enrich people's lives and help them live each day better. While this is a great vision to have, I need to get more specific. So this year I'm actually taking time to create a vision and a plan. Having a bigger picture in mind will allow me to be more successful at achieving my goals and becoming the 'new me' that I want to be.
So what do you want to do in 2015? Is there a big trip that you want to take in the summer? Is it a wedding that you want to be able to attend or your own wedding perhaps?
Here are a few tips to help you come up with your vision:
- What do you really want? Find a goal or a milestone event that is meaningful to you
- Why do you really want it? Become very clear on why it is meaningful to you. If the goal you chose isn't really that meaningful, choose another one. The goal is to have a vision that drives you
- What does that look like? How will I feel once I've achieved it? Visualize how you want to look and feel once you've achieved that goal or reached that milestone event.
Having a clear vision of what we want, and more importantly, why we want it, helps pull us through the difficult hurdles that will surely come up. In case we fall down, that vision will be there to get us back up. The day after I danced at my brother's wedding I was admitted to hospital for an emergency surgery. Infection came oozing out of a foot I had surgery on the prior year. It was 8 weeks until I could put any pressure on that foot again - so I could no longer do yoga, Pilates or just walk around the city. But once that foot healed, I was back in yoga class. Even with that little hurdle, I had already come too far to want to go back to my illness-ridden old self.
Remember that falling down is an opportunity to learn, strengthen and improve the next thing you do!
'All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.' ~ Brian Tracy
- Take time to sit with your thoughts
- Ask yourself, what do you want for 2015?
- Determine the activities, lifestyle, relationships that will lead you towards that vision
- Try to figure out the daily and weekly habits that you want to develop, as soon as you can so life does not get in the way. For example, if I want to publish a book, I'm going to budget time for daily writing. Think of these activities as your new routine / lifestyle.
- Figure out how to fit those activities into your schedule. If playing candy crush, for example, is getting in your way of exercising, then may be use some of the time you spend playing candy crush to do some exercise. Focusing primarily on those daily and weekly activities will set you up to achieve your vision.
