Greetings!
It's almost been a month since you made those New Year resolutions. Are you sticking to them or have you been holding off?
If one of your goals was to start eating healthy this year, then you'll find a few helpful tips to get you started in this issue's feature article: Tips to help you change your diet. (I'll also explain the story behind the picture above.)
I hosted a webinar last month on What's Triggering Your Flares. I was so blessed to have so many of you attend. I discussed several dietary and lifestyle factors that can put your immune system at risk. I, also, talked very candidly about the need to get to the bottom of why your immune system is not working properly and to fix it instead of rely on prescription medications which do nothing but mask your symptoms and, in most cases, create additional symptoms and side effects. If you don't get to the bottom of what's causing your immune system to dysfunction, you will continue to only manage your symptoms.
If you would like to listen to a recording of this complimentary webinar, please send me an e-mail to rana@live-healthfully.com.
On the webinar, I offered a special one-time only savings on my MOVE.NOURSIH.TRANFORM VIP Day, where you and I will plan your recovery on the spot. This offer is valid only until February 14, 2014. Read below for more details on how to take advantage of this offer.
I, also, put together a great visual for you of healthy food replacements. Click on the link below to download your copy:

A very big "Welcome" to all of the new readers who have joined my newsletter list since last month! You're going to love the inspiration you will find here. Enjoy! If you know someone who suffers from chronic illness or is the parent of a child or young adult who suffers from chronic illness, please forward this newsletter to them. It is very rewarding to be able to share information with others, especially when that information can help change their lives for the better.
Sincerely,
Rana Ghaoui

I am a Holistic Health Coach, a Certified Yoga teacher and Arthritis Exercise Instructor. I grew up with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and have family members who are dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. I have, personally, experienced the power of holistic nutrition, lifestyle adjustment, exercise, and various alternative therapies on reducing the debilitating symptoms of RA.

Feature Article: Tips to Help You Change Your Diet
|
It was this time 3 years ago, way before I became a health coach.
I was propping up myself against the kitchen's bench top. I could hardly move but I resolved on the phone to my mum that I was going to dance at my brother's wedding in August.
My acupuncturist had advised me to start loving spinach. So I did, but I also loved Zaro's Challa bread so much that I could eat one loaf of it in one sitting at least a couple of times a week. So that day, I got very honest with myself. I was hardly standing up and in a very short 6 months, I had to be well enough to be jumping on my feet. If I were serious about getting better, I had to do things properly. No more dabbling with a bit of spinach here and a bit of turmeric there. My entire life needed an overhaul.
I'm not saying that what I did from then on to change my diet is what everyone should do. It's what worked for me. (Looking back, even what I thought was an all or nothing approach, was only a first step in the right direction. I made many more refinements along the way.) So, I cleaned out my fridge, indulged in the remaining slice of Zaro's challa bread and swore it off. It wasn't easy passing by Zaro's. I would look away or go a completely different route to avoid the temptation of just one more. That weekend, I forced myself to go to the farmer's market. Funny how we can change! Now, not a weekend can go by without paying a visit to my farmer friends and their market, but then, I had to drag myself feeling no desire for anything the market had to offer.
Whether it's easier for you to cut back gradually or to just quit cold turkey, here are my top tips to help you make that dietary change you promised yourself:
- What motivation do you have for changing your diet? Find a goal or a milestone event that is meaningful to you so you can stay engaged. For me, visualizing what I would look like at my brother's wedding - being happy and sharing in everyone's happiness - kept me going
- Decide what change you want to make. Do you want to remove all your sugar and white flo
ur products at once or do you want to do it gradually? You can go as big or as small as you want but do take into account your goal. I was aggressive because I only had a few months to make sure I was not only walking, but strong enough to dance in high heels - Set yourself a start date. When are you going to start? You may also choose a deadline for when you want to have all the sugar out of your diet
- If you decide to make gradual changes, set yourself some small manageable goals. For example: This week I will stop drinking soda and if I'm ready next week, I will switch the sugar in my coffee to stevia
- Start substituting with healthier food choices. It may take some conscious effort at the start but, eventually, it becomes habit. To help you out, I developed a list of food substitutions that you can hang on your fridge. Click here to download it
- Make sure you are never hungry which means planning your meals and snacks ahead of time. Bring snacks to work or any time you're out of the house for long periods of time such as when you're driving long distances
- Celebrate small successes along the way. I celebrated every time I pushed myself to walk an extra block. Celebrating those successes will keep you motivated to do more
It can be very difficult to change the way you eat without the support of a professional. If you know you want to make these changes but feel overwhelmed about doing it on your own, e-mail me at rana@live-healthfully.com so you can get help from someone who understands the challenges that you're going through.
You may have guessed by now. The photo above is of me dancing at my brother's wedding. Not only did I dance all day but I, also, co-ordinated the hosts and hostesses, made sure all guests were being looked after, and took care of all the vendors (DJs, dancers, firework contractors, etc.) who helped make his wedding absolutely wonderful.

Yoga / Exercise Tips to Increase Range of Motion and Joint Strength
|
Neck: Drop your chin to your chest. Wipe your chest with your chin (moving your chin sideways). Imagine you had yummy chocolate syrup on your chest and you were trying your best to get to it so you could eat it!
Hands: This will help you with picking up objects. Touch the tip of every finger to your thumb making an "O" shape with your hand. Repeat about 10 times for each hand. See the picture on the side for help.
