Closing out 2013

'

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.' ~ Buddha

December 30, 2013
Greetings!

The picture above is of me with Lord Ganesha at the Hindu Temple I visited while in Kauai for the Christmas holidays. Lord Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and as we approach a brand new year I hope that all obstacles and challenges you faced in 2013 will fade away.

While you're still contemplating your 2014 resolutions, I challenge you to make just one resolution that you can stick to. Look out for a special New Year's newsletter where I will share with you my tips on how to set just one resolution that you can easily meet, feel proud of yourself for meeting and can, eventually, turn it into a habit.

In this issue, I reflect briefly on my 2013 as I invite you to reflect on yours - the good, the bad and the lessons learned. Because no year ever passes without its ups and downs, it's important to draw on those lessons in the coming year.

I will share my top tips with you on how to manage a flare if you're experiencing one this holiday season, in "How to Manage a Holiday Flare'I will, also, share with you important information about the complimentary webinar that I will be holding in January on 'What Triggers Your Flares'. The goal of this FREE webinar is to help you make better choices that strengthen your immune system by identifying those factors that cause it to be weak.

To find out more details or to register, send me an e-mail to rana@live-healthfully.com. In the meantime, I have provided you with a bonus handout on one of the main culprits of flare ups: Sugar. When you sign up to the webinar you will receive my full list of tips on how to manage a flare up as well as hand-outs on other factors that trigger flares.

If you have any questions on how to manage your paiin, feel free to e-mail me and we can talk about ways you can deal with your flare up immediately and how we can get you feeling healthier, happier and more energized going forward.

Starting in January, I will be adding a new section to my newsletter on yoga tips that will help ease your pain and loosen stiff joints. Yoga has completely changed my life and put me on the path to where I am now. It continues to grow and enrich my life as I deepen my own practice and improve my teaching skills. I would like to share this knowledge with you so I can continue to add value and make a difference in your life.

A very big "Welcome" to all of the new readers who have joined my newsletter list since last month! You're going to love the inspiration you will find here. Enjoy! If you know someone who suffers from chronic illness or is the parent of a child or young adult who suffers from chronic illness, please forward this newsletter to them. It is very rewarding to be able to share information with others, especially when that information can help change their lives for the better.

I hope your New Year's celebrations are joyful. Hope the New Year will be filled with health, happiness, peace, joy, gratitude and abundance!

Sincerely,

What Triggers Your Flares?

Do you know someone who has suffered from the same symptoms as you - severe swelling, pain that shows up unannounced, difficulty moving, fatigue, depression and stiffness - and has told you they've made simple changes to their diet and lifestyle that have helped them live better lives? Maybe they eliminated dairy.... Or, was it gluten? You wish someone would tell you what to do because you don't know where to start, how to change or if it will work.

I want to help you get to the bottom of why you (or your child) are feeling tired, sick and symptomatic all the time. I'm going to share it on a COMPLIMENTARY webinar that's taking place in January. I will help you:

  • Understand all pieces of the puzzle (the triggers) that put your immune system at risk
  • Identify the piece that you've been neglecting and how it's causing the symptoms you're experiencing
  • Understand why what you put in your body helps manage autoimmune disease
  • Figure out the strategy that works for you and your body so you can get to optimal health

Once you understand what's causing your inflammation and implement the strategies I recommed:

  • You will feel better and your immune system will be stronger and happier
  • You will have less inflammation in your body which means less joint pain, fewer headaches, greater mobility and relief from other bothersome symptoms such as brain fogs and fatigue
To find out more or to register, send me an e-mail to rana@live-healthfully.com.

I can't wait to share this information with you!

If you have a friend who also suffers from Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis or another autoimmune disease, kindly let them know about this webinar. I would love to help them, too. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail to rana@live-healthfully.com.

Feature Article: How to Manage a Holiday Flare

How do you deal with a flare up if and when it happens? Here are a few tips to help you navigate those uncomfortable hours, may be days:

  1. Be patient with yourself, the flare may go away by the afternoon or the next day. The more you fight the pain, the longer it persists. If you need to spend time in bed or take anti-inflammatories, go for it. It is what it is. But, If you constantly focus on the pain, you will forget the amazing, intelligent human being that resides in your body. You are not the body part that is aching. You are so much more than that
  2. Be grateful for the small things, you'll feel better for it. Think that you get to spend your holiday surrounded by people who love you and who will be there for you if you needed them
  3. It's ok to ask for help. Ask people to help you up and down the stairs, or to help you take your shoes off. On New Years' Eve 3 years ago, I had 2 friends pull on my rain boots for 5 minutes before the boots would come off. It's uncomfortable to ask for help, but people are always more than happy to lend a hand. You can show them gratitude or repay them later when you're feeling better
    1. If you're travelling, ask for a wheel chair. I have done it many times, especially while recovering from surgery
  4. Soak joints in hot water if they're stiff or place an ice pack on inflamed joints. In case of MS, stay as warm or as cool as you can (depending on weather) using clothes and heaters / air conditioners instead of soaking in hot water
  5. Rest in a supported position. If you're going to spend your day in bed or on the couch, pad yourself up with cushions and blankets so your joints are supported

I understand that there are physical, psychological, relational and spiritual challenges that you have to deal with on a daily basis. That is why I have designed my health coaching programs to allow change to happen in a practical, enjoyable way that gradually enhances the quality of your everyday life without creating overwhelm. Together, we will flip the pain on its head using it, instead, as a "guiding light" to focus our attention on the positive changes you need to make.

Reflecting on 2013
I invite you to reflect on your 2013. What was great and what could have been better? Try to recount an event that made you really happy and an event that really upset you, remember your feelings around it and the ultimate outcome. Was it as bad as you had imagined? Is there a lesson you can learn from that incident that you can apply when events in the future do not go your way?

Even though I dealt with Scleritis in my left eye and Irits in my right eye and, even though, I may be facing a diagnosis of a new autoimmune condition, I am very grateful for all the good things that happened this year, for all the lives that I've touched and helped, for all the amazing people who came into my life and for those with whom I have had the pleasure of building even stronger relationships.

I graduated as a Yoga Instructor. I got promoted in my full-time management consulting job which is a great achievement. I had the opportunity to represent millions of people with RA in front of US Senate and Congress and I am very grateful that I was able to work with many on an individual basis to help change their lives for the better.

What are you thankful for?

Sharing success stories

Working with a Health Coach was a completely new experience for me.  I'm well aware of the importance of healthy eating, but Rana was able to show me how proper diet can act as a powerful medicine.  Since I began working with Rana in 2012, I've put away my pain killers, I'm looking much better and I feel better emotionally.  I've also come to the understanding that beyond nutrition, living healthfully is about connecting body with mind and finding balance between our busy lives and our needs.  Thanks to Rana, I have found that if you want your body to be kind to you, it is imperative that you treat your body well in all aspects.  Her counseling and advice were very thoughtful and practical, and I found the materials she used extremely informative.

I've truly enjoyed the experience I've had working together with Rana and would recommend her to anyone looking to improve their health and well being through a caring and knowledgeable advisor.
