Greetings!
I hope you've been having a great summer! Two weeks ago, I started a 6-week Arthritis Exercise Program at MAX FiT in Howell, NJ. Here's a picture of the group that attended the first class...and the group has grown since then! I hope that more of you will join us soon. I have many fun ideas planned for this class.
I've been busy this summer working on some EXCITING new "things" that I can't wait to start sharing with you in the weeks and months to come.
Summer is drawing to a close and a new season is upon us. In many ways, fall is the start of a new year. Kids go back to school and vacationers start going back to work. To honor this season of new beginnings, I am offering COMPLIMENTARY 30 minute HEALth Breakthrough sessions for the entire month of September to help you kick start those health goals you thought about all summer long!
Click here or send me an e-mail to rana@live-healthfully.com to schedule your 30 min session today!
The third session of the F.R.E.E 6-week exercise program is coming up this Saturday, August 31st at MAX FiT, in Howell NJ! The space has been graciously donated by my amazing health coach friend, Jeffrey Jordan. Classes start at 10 a.m. and run for 45 min every Saturday. Details are provided in the 'Upcoming Events' section.
This issue's feature article is about: Living beyond the diagnosis
You've been diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease. You're now on meds and seeing at least one specialist. You're wondering...what lies ahead? The diagnosis may make you feel like you're being punished by God for something awful that you had done. You may start relegating all things that bring you joy, all dreams and ambitions to another lifetime, when you don't have an illness...but that's a very slippery slope that can quickly lead to a shadow version of you, a version that's too psychologically crippled to heal or enjoy life.
My goal in this article is to help you get past all the fears, bypass that slippery slope and focus on what you really want most...to heal
Also in this issue, I share with you information about a food group that may be impacting your joint pain and swelling. As a special bonus, I prepared a handout for you that you can hang up on your fridge.

A very big "Welcome" to all of the new readers who have joined my newsletter list since last month! You're going to love the inspiration you will find here. Enjoy! If you know someone who suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis or is the parent of a child or young adult who suffers from either condition, please forward this newsletter to them. It is very rewarding to be able to share information with others, especially when that information can help change their lives for the better.
Have a great rest of your week!
Sincerely,
Rana Ghaoui

How to start living beyond the diagnosis
|

A diagnosis is tough news to handle. Many questions will come up:
- Why did it happen? Did I do something to deserve it? How will I cope with it?
- How can I pursue all those plans I had for my life when I have this illness to deal with?
All you want now that you've been diagnosed is for things to go back to the way they were. So, what can you do to start healing?
Here are my top 5 tips to help you face the diagnosis with courage and focus on your healing:
- Start by changing your beliefs about illness and healing - It is important to release the misconception that God / the Buddha / the universe acts like a parent figure that will reward and punish. Love does not punish and you definitely did not get ill because you are being punished. Start, instead, to pay more attention to your spirituality. By nurturing your spirituality, you will reduce your susceptibility to fear and the choices you make based on fear. You will, also, gain the inner strength that will see you through your healing journey
- Commit to yourself - The actual work that needs to be done can only be done by you. So ask yourself:
- What motivation do you have for healing?
- What have you dreamed up for your life before your illness and what part of that dream do you still want to accomplish?
- What action can you take today to make the dream reality? Rome was not built in a day and healing an illness does not happen overnight. Healing requires that you practice regularly whatever healing discipline(s) you choose to adopt
- See beyond the visible - You are able to choose which thoughts to dwell on. Choose to see a healthy, strong and fit version of you. Dwell on your strengths...you have many, just look at yourself in the mirror....Faith and optimism are key to healing. Send yourself positive, optimistic messages; through loving self-talk, by being compassionate with yourself, by celebrating each accomplishment you make regardless of whether you think the accomplishment is big or small
- Find ways to stay inspired - Inspire yourself with the stories and wisdom of those who have pulled themselves through nightmarish experiences and gone on to build productive, joyful lives. Inspirational stories lift you and keep you optimistic about your own potential to heal. You may have been diagnosed with an illness but you still have the power to decide whether the diagnosis and the illness will handicap your spirit
- Practice describing yourself as an individual separate from your illness. Try not to confuse who you are with the body part that is hurting. You are larger than your illness. As Carolyn Myss likes to say, "your biography becomes your biology", so don't let your illness control every aspect of your being. Find those words that describe you as the strong person that you are and that describe your illness as an experience through which you are passing. Here are some examples you could use:
- "My spirit is stronger than my physical body"
- "Illness holds a message of change for me and I need to be receptive to whatever change is necessary"
- "There are lessons I must learn as I work through the process of healing"
All crises pass, nothing ever stays the same. Illness can become the means through which you discover your true calling or your most valuable abilities. Don't let the limitations you experience today influence what you may experience tomorrow. Everything is possible and the universe is always listening!

| Food Focus: Night Shades - What are they and should you eat them? |
- Popular night shades include tomatoes, eggplant, all kinds of peppers (except black pepper) and potatoes
- Night shades contain high levels of solanine, an alkaloid which causes bones to excrete calcium, other minerals, and trace elements
- Night shades may have several benefits especially for those who become tense from work, stress, or other activities which require great concentration
- If you have arthritis, it is wise to use these vegetables sparingly or better yet, to avoid them all together
- Notice if you experience stiffness, loss of energy, diarrhea, headaches, vomiting, light-headedness or difficulty focusing several hours after eating night shades
- If you are sensitive to night shades, start reading labels. Some homeopathics, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications as well as numerous processed foods contain nightshades
Click here to get your FREE Night Shade hand out. Included in this list are some surprises, which although not truly nightshades, share the same inflammation-inducing alkaloids.

"Rana from Live HEALthfully was one of the best sources of help and inspiration that I found during my recent challenging period of out-of-control rheumatoid arthritis and severe corticosteroid withdrawal a few months back.
Whether it was a suggestion on what to eat (or what not to eat), or how to safely exercise different parts of my body, or what forms of nutritional supplements were the most effective, she always seemed to have the answers I was looking for. I would highly recommend her health coaching services to anyone who is looking to get more in touch with their body, mind, and soul."
