It's Summer Celebration Time!

Our annual Summer Celebration is just around the corner. Please join us on Thursday, July 24 at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of music, games, community, and, of course, custard.

The line up of events includes familiar fun like balloon twisting, face painting, live music from Frogwater on the lawn, and trolley rides. We'll also be visited by Roscoe, from the Milwaukee Admirals, and the Sheriff's Department Mounted Horse unit!

This year we've changed one big thing: the day! So we don't conflict with another popular Shorewood summer event - the Summer Sounds Concert Series at Hubbard Park on Wednesdays - we've moved the Celebration to Thursday. Make sure to note that on your calendar. We hope to see you there!

Familiar Faces, New Positions
Please join us in welcoming our two newest Circulation staff members, Dan Holt and Jarrett Strohm. You'll recognize their familiar faces as they have a combined 8+ years of Shorewood Library experience between them (as Library Shelvers and Library Aides).

Both Jarrett and Dan are graduates of Shorewood High School and are long-time residents of Shorewood. Dan and Jarrett will be working at our Circulation Desk to help you check out materials, register for a new card, and generally help make your overall experience at the Circulation Desk a pleasant and enjoyable one.

Congratulations Dan & Jarrett - we're glad to have you as part of our Circulation staff team!

Where's Leo?
Our annual game is back! Each summer, Leo, our library mascot, heads out of doors to explore Shorewood. This year, he's getting to know some of the many businesses in our community. Every week he'll visit somewhere new - it's up to you to guess where he is! Guess right and you could win a gift certificate donated by the business Leo visited. Simply submit your guess online by each Monday morning to be eligible! Go here to check it out: Where's Leo.
Teen Photo Contest runs through July 31
The Summer Teen Photo Contest is open until July 31 for teens in grades 7-12. Submit photos now at shorlibteens.tumblr.com for a chance to win!
Tweens Get Crafty, No Glue Required
If you've ever been in the youth section of the library on an average day after school (or nearly any time of the day in the summer), you have seen kids playing Minecraft. A hugely popular computer game, it's all about building and surviving in a world you customize. Creativity abounds!

This summer, we're holding Minecraft Meet-ups for grades 4-7. The first one was a huge success, with a few technology hiccups. Even with the occasional glitch, participants worked together and alone to build a series of unique castles. The next meeting on Wed., July 9, will work a little differently: we'll have two start times,1pm and 2pm, which kids can sign up for starting at 12:45. Our Minecraft Team (clerk Nathan, librarian Emily, and teen volunteers Nicholas, Zoe & Lars) is also making sure we have more laptops available.

We hope to see many of you (and more?!) at the next two meet-ups to see what we can craft!

Shorewood Grows Readers...and Artists!
Design contest for kids & teens now on
2013-14 sign
by SHS student Celeste
This year we are bringing back our window sign design contest for kids & teens. We distribute window signs to summer reading participants, so it's extra special for kids to get to design one that may be used!

Young artists can come pick up a blank "Shorewood Grows Readers" sign and customize it in their own unique style.Winners in each age category will win gift cards and their artwork may be used in library displays and promotions - even after summer reading! Learn more about the contest on our website.

Contest ends August 16.

From the Friends
A monthly update from the Friends of Shorewood Public Library

Friends' Programming Targets Children, Teens, Adults

At the Friends of the Shorewood Library's June meeting, board members voted to sign on as a sponsor of Shorewood Plein Air 2014. This will be Shorewood's second annual Plein Air event, which will bring professional painters to the village from September 17-20. The event will culminate in an art sale and gala at the library at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Supporting Plein Air Shorewood is an example of how the Friends organization works to back a wide array of literary and visual arts programming for residents of all ages - including things like author visits, and our annual Holiday Book Talk by Daniel Goldin of Boswell Book Shop. In the past we've sponsored art exhibits and, in 2011, the first-ever Shorewood Reads. We routinely sponsor programs for youth and families, such as the popular Summer Celebration, and Summer Reading Programs. We even made a small donation to support the library's popular Lego Club!

Consider as well the Friends' Book Club, which meets at 10 a.m. on the third Thursday of most months at the library. There's no need to sign up. Just read the book (check the new 2014-15 schedule here) and show up to discuss it. On a related note, members of the Friends' Board of Directors are considering launching a second book club that would meet in the evening. Interested? If so, email us at:  [email protected].

For that matter, we'd love to hear from you with ideas for programs you'd like to see the Friends get involved in developing or perhaps co-sponsoring with other local groups
