Kick off summer with a memorable evening of outdoor theater
|
Shorewood Library & the Friends of Shorewood Library are excited to present Stone Soup Shakespeare theater company performing As You Like It right here in Shorewood. Stone Soup Shakespeare, based in southern Illinois, brings the bard to life with music, puppetry and more. Using the beauty of Shakespeare's words and their years of experience, they craft an accessible performance, suitable for most ages, and replete with comedy and a touch of magic. True to the children's story from which they derive their name, the company encourages charity in the form of food. Plan to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to a local food pantry. Come spend an evening on the library lawn with the family, a picnic, and theater. We recommend you bring something to sit on (blanket, chairs, etc.). What better way to get summer started! Join us Saturday, May 31 at 6pm. Rain location will be the Village Center Meeting Room. Back to top

Night of Awesome for Charity & Fun

Shorewood's Teen Advisory Board plans an awesome-themed night to celebrate the release of The Fault in Our Stars movie
|
Members of Shorewood Library's Teen Advisory Board (TAB) have been hard at work planning an Night of Awesome to celebrate the release of the movie based on John Green's blockbuster book, The Fault in Our Stars (aka TFIOS). On Friday, May 30, from 5-7pm, every teen in Shorewood and beyond is invited to come binge watch Vlogbrothers videos, make crafts to spruce up the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, share a note on a cloud to make a giant mural of awesomeness to show off in the library & more. The TAB would like to invite everyone (that means all ages) to come to the event to donate hair! We'll be sending locks to Children with Hair Loss, a no-waste charity that makes wigs for kids. TFIOS movie star Shailene Woodley donated her locks to CWHL when filming the movie, dubbing the hair donation #HairForHazel, in honor of the book/movie's main character, cancer patient Hazel. We'll have a professional stylist on hand so we'll all look like Shai (see book cover on the right) when we're done. Why awesome? Why charity? Because author John Green urges us to give back. The Nerdfighter community - as Green's legion of fans prefer to be known - dedicate themselves to increasing awesome and decreasing suck. Okay? Okay. Back to top

Looking for something different to read or watch? Check out these recommended titles from our staff!
|
- The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change by Adam Braun - Susan, our library associate, recommends this book, saying it was great "to read about a young person...who is striving to share his lessons learned along the way with others." Read the rest of Susan's review on the staff blog.
- All the Truth That's In Me by Julie Berry - Young Adult librarian Emily recommends this 2013 YA title for lovers of historical fiction and well-crafted stories: "Slightly eerie, enormously different, this is an interesting read for adults as well as teens." Read more YA recommendations from Emily.
- Zoo Station by David Downing - Assistant Director, Joe, says this first book in Downing's Station Series is perfect for series fiction enthusiasts. Set at the dawn of WWII, main character John Russell - a British expat in Nazi Germany - finds himself in, as Joe says, "some very precarious positions" through friendships with the wrong people. Sounds thrilling!

A monthly update from the Friends of Shorewood Public Library

Friends Launch Little Free Library There's a new library in town, located at the bottom of the steps leading to the library's Murray Avenue entrance. It's a Little Free Library, one of more than 15,000 worldwide and reportedly the eighth to be erected in Shorewood. Brought to you courtesy of the Friends, the Little Free Library should come in handy when in the mood to do a bit of brook browsing only to find the Shorewood Library closed. As of it's start date, the approximately 20 volumes inside included titles such as: The Color of Water, WikiLeaks, Olive Kitteridge, The Lord of the Rings, The Emerald City of Oz, and Quick Veggie Curries. To make sure our Little Free Library is never empty, the Friends' volunteers who run our Used Book Sale have agreed to oversee its operation, keeping it stocked with a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books. Many thanks to the Friends' members and other library patrons whose donations made this project possible. Read more about the Little Free Library. On another happy note, be sure to check out the Shorewood Library's new Lucky Day book collection, funded by a $2,500 donation from the Friends.
