Issue 11
July/August 2014

The month of July has given us two notable events and we're taking inspiration from them both.

On July 4th our country celebrated Independence Day and we were reminded just how important PHYSICAL INDEPENDENCE is to quality of life. The World Cup of Soccer captured the attention of much of the world, reminding us to set clear GOOOOOOALS for wellness.

Whether it's achieving physical independence or setting and attaining your health and wellness goals, we hope to have the opportunity to accompany, assist and inspire you to enjoy the benefits of an active, healthy, pain-free lifestyle.

To your health!

Headaches & PT
Helping Patients with Headaches & Migraines

Headache Pain

Pain of any type that occurs in any part of the head is called a headache. There are many different types of headaches, with just as many causes.

The International Headache Society describes several different categories of HEADACHE:

● Tension-type

Migraine and cluster

● Secondary headaches from an underlying condition, such as fever, infectious disease, sinus disorder, or in rare cases, a tumor or more serious illness

Cranial neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches

MIGRAINE is a disorder in the central nervous system involving the nerves and blood vessels, which results Headache Pain in pain and neurologic symptoms. Whereas medications affect the central nervous system in an attempt to address dysfunction, physical therapy primarily involves work on the muscles and joints in the peripheral system.

There is an effective treatment for almost every type of headache. The challenge lies in determining the type of headache, its cause, and in developing an appropriate treatment plan that will reduce both its frequency and intensity.

Headache Stretch Our physical therapists can help determine the type of headache you have and help you manage the pain.
We will work with you to correct the problems that are causing your pain and will help you learn to prevent headaches through a few simple changes:

● Improve neck mobility
● Improve upper back and neck strength

● Improve posture

Ask the trained professionals at the Center for Physical Health to develop a program to help relieve, decrease and manage your headache pain

Hands-On Healing
Increasing Mobility & Flexibility

Therapeutic Massage Our bodies, dynamic and complex, constantly

negotiate homeostasis (equilibrium) between tension and release, between strength and fluidity.

Creating, improving and maintaining this balance is key for our healthy movement and our happiness.

Unfortunately, most people underestimate the negative and far-reaching effects of their body's tissue losing its mobility and flexibility - which can result in painful or even frozen movement, weakness, injury and illness.

Therapeutic massage can be a powerful remedy for this loss and all of its subsequent pathologies.

Sohan Noah Youngelson The Center for Physical Health offers two bodywork and massage therapists: Sohan Noah Youngelson (Massage, CranioSacral Therapist & Visceral Manipulation Practitioner) and Melissa Stander (Certified Melissa Stander Massage Therapist & Reiki Master). You can read their bios by clicking on their names or photos.

Please call us at 310.475.6038 for more about therapeutic massage or to book an appointment.
