Pain Management & PT
Physical Therapy Playing a Vital Role

Woman in Pain

Physical therapy plays a vital role in helping patients manage and overcome chronic pain.

A physical therapist will administer treatments that include strengthening and flexibility exercises, manual therapy, posture awareness, and body mechanics instruction. Physical therapists can also help a patient to understand the underlying cause of their pain.

They will focus on decreasing pain with either passive or active therapy.

Examples of passive physical therapy include:

● Heat and/or ice packs

● TENS units (electrotherapy)

● Ultrasound

● Laser

Examples of active physical therapy include:

● Stretching

Strengthening exercises

Pain relief exercises

Low-impact aerobic conditioning

An important aspect to keep in mind about physical
Man in Pain therapy is that it is individualized to meet each person's needs. One person may respond differently to therapy than another. People have different types of pain, bodies, patterns of movement, alignments, and habits.

The
trained professionals at the Center for Physical Health will develop a program to help relieve, decrease, and manage your physical pain.

TRX News at the Center
Sports Medicine Suspension Training

The Center has just been accepted as a host facility TRX Suspension Training for an upcoming course in Sports Medicine Suspension Training and the TRX system.

The July 26th training will be at the Center for qualified professionals to learn how the TRX Suspension System can be utilized in the sports medicine rehabilitation world.

Our selection as a host facility is exciting to us, as TRX Suspension Training Center professionals have been on the PT forefront in its application to the rehab world, creatively adapting the TRX system to meet the physical therapy needs of our patients and clients.

Center for Physical Health PT John Dillon will be attending the training, allowing us to expand the number of available TRX classes we offer to include TRX Suspension Training TRX for seniors and an evening class during the week.

TRX leverages gravity and your body weight to develop strength, balance, fitness, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. Certified TRX Trainer John Sweetman currently teaches a Saturday class from 11:30-12:30.

More information about the TRX Suspension Training system may be found at www.trxtraining.com.

UCLA's Meditation Awareness Research Center

UCLA's Mindfulness Awareness Research Center's UCLA Health (MARC) mission is to foster mindful awareness across the lifespan through education and research to promote well-being and a more compassionate society.

Mindful awareness can be defined as paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, Mindful Awareness curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is. It is an excellent antidote to the stresses of modern times. It invites us to stop, breathe, observe, and connect with one's inner experience. It also helps us to create greater mind-body awareness.

There are many ways to bring mindfulness into one's life, such as meditation, yoga, art, or time in nature. Mindfulness can be trained systematically, and can be implemented in daily life, by people of any age, profession or background.

In the last ten years, significant research has shown Mindful Awareness mindfulness to address health issues such as lower blood pressure and boost the immune system; increase attention and focus, including aid those suffering from ADHD; help with difficult mental states such as anxiety and depression, fostering well-being and less emotional reactivity; and thicken the brain in areas in charge of decision making, emotional flexibility, and empathy.

MARC's activities and objectives:

● Classes and workshops to the general public

● FREE guided meditations on the website and iTunes
● Foster and publicize research to support the scientific benefits of mindful awareness

● Bring mindfulness to medical professionals through UCLA's medical education program

● Offer mindfulness tools and classes to medical professionals
