Greetings!
When summer arrives with its additional hours of daylight, we're all more active. It's important though, that we choose the right exercise for our current physical condition and properly prepare our bodies to prevent injury. In the unfortunate event of injury, our staff is here to help you recover and rehabilitate just as quickly and completely as possible. We hope you'll consider forwarding this newsletter to a friend or telling someone about us. We also invite you to visit our website and Facebook page. To your health!

Class IV Laser Therapy
Promoting healing, circulation & pain relief
Laser therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light for therapeutic purposes such as decreased healing time, increased circulation and reduced pain and swelling.
Class IV deep-tissue laser therapy can be a vital part of any recovery and rehabilitation protocol.
Laser therapy is often used in conjunction with physical therapy, massage, and soft tissue mobilization to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
Because laser therapy promotes healing, it can be used before or after certain surgical procedures. Progressive laser therapy is also an alternative non-invasive, non-surgical solution for patients suffering from un-managed pain.
Research demonstrates laser therapy can: ● Help injuries heal faster
● Strengthen tissue repair ● Improve blood flow and lymphatic drainage ● Stimulate pain relief ● Improve immune response FDA-approved uses of laser therapy devices include topical healing, temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, muscle spasm, pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and promoting muscle relaxation. Treatments are cumulative and the best results are often after multiple sessions. The Center for Physical Health is equipped with the newest FDA-approved Class IV Laser. Contact us to include Class IV Laser Treatment in your physical therapy regimine.

The Weekend Warrior Do's and Dont's to Avoid Injury and Pain
It's important to be physically active, while at the same time avoiding injuries. This is especially important for a 'weekend warrior'. If you are sedentary during the week, it's very important to plan ahead in order to avoid exercise-related injuries.
Be realistic. Don't expect your body to adapt right away to intense activities. Exercise intensity must be progressive; otherwise the risk for injury increases. Getting some regular exercise every day allows your body to adapt and prepare for your favorite weekend activities. Warm-up. A simple way to help avoid or minimize injuries, eight to ten minutes of walking or light jogging combined with some light stretching is a great way to prepare your body for exercise.
Cool down. When finished with activity, do not come to a sudden stop. Cool down and give your muscles a chance to recover by reducing intensity, but still moving. A cool down period helps restore blood circulation and reduce injuries.
And don't forget to make sure you wear proper protective gear, and stay hydrated.
Physical therapy plays an important role in injury prevention for weekend warriors. Regardless of your age and activity level, physical therapy can help prevent injuries and improve well-being.
As your physical therapists, we are committed to helping you do the things you enjoy over the weekend and make the most out of your summer. Call us today at 310.475.6038.

Moving Freely with Arthritis
The Feldenkrais Method® = Stress-Free Exercise
Many people with arthritis find it challenging to get enough exercise. They hesitate to do something that might exacerbate their arthritis symptoms rather than make them better.
While conventional exercise typically involves repetition of strenuous movements, The Feldenkrais Method takes a very different approach, bearing little resemblance to conventional forms of exercise and working on entirely different principles. It involves no stretching or straining, requires only minimal muscular effort and uses slow, gentle, easy-to-do movements.
By engaging the brain's ability to relearn and change, Feldenkrais improves the exchange of relevant information between the nervous system and the muscles, resulting in movement becoming more comfortable.
Feldenkrais provides many of the benefits commonly associated with exercise, including lubrication of joints, increased flexibility, better circulation, improved respiratory function, better coordination and balance, and an overall sense of well-being.
For people with arthritis, The Feldenkrais Method can help to reduce friction, swelling and inflammation in the joints, and can interrupt cycles of pain and tension.
Once a person is able to move comfortably, they may be able to start engaging in more strenuous aerobic or strength-building exercises.

Heal One World - together we can heal...
Skye Kelly started the non-profit Heal One World after her own experiences with disability, and the relief she found from non-invasive therapies. The organization helps connect people in need -- particularly children and adults with chronic illnesses -- with preventative health care, non-traditional and complementary modalities, natural non-invasive treatments, and guidance in learning self-help techniques that are generally not covered by insurance. Access to this help is offered on a sliding scale, free of charge or on a donation basis. This non-profit organization also holds classes on a free or sliding scale basis that provide self-help and self-healing techniques.
Heal One World arranges and promotes clinics where low cost treatment can be found, as well as maintains a database of providers who are interested in helping those in need. The focus is on long-term well-being of body, spirit and mind.
Heal One World also offers people in need a forum to ask questions and state their issues, and then helps them find the best provider to help them reach their goal of health.
Center staff member Bridget Quebodeaux (Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and Marriage and Family Intern in training with Dynamic Emotion Focused Therapy) recently taught a two-day workshop Taking the Chronic out of Pain at Heal One World.
