September 2016 Newsletter

Welcome to our school newsletter with news and events for the month of September. We look forward to seeing all of our school parents at our Back to School Nights on September 13th and 14th.

Principal's Message
I wish to extend a warm welcome to all of our new and returning families. Our faculty and staff were so happy to meet your children today and look forward to an exciting and successful school year!

Our teachers were engaged in various professional development opportunities throughout the summer and are anxious to share all that they have learned with their students, especially the programs, new technologies, and skills associated with a 21st Century education.

The summer months were also used to "spruce-up" our school facility. A display area was created in the front hallway for the flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of our school's 50th Anniversary, a "Home of the Blue Jays" sign was added to our sports trophy case, new rugs were installed in the kindergarten, several windows were repaired, and all classrooms were thoroughly cleaned in preparation of the students' arrival. In addition, we ordered twenty desktop computers and scanning software for the Media Center and fifteen iPads for one of our iPad carts.

Please plan to pray with us during our opening school liturgy on Friday, September 9th, at 11:00 A.M. During the Mass, we will welcome new faculty, staff, and students (Grades 1 - 8) to our school community, induct new Student Council officers, and recognize our eighth grade students as the leaders of our school.

I look forward to seeing all of our school parents at our Back to School Nights, which will be held on September 13th (PreK - Grade 3) & September 14th (Grades 4 - 8). Parents will have the opportunity to meet our faculty and staff and learn about school initiatives for the 2016 - 2017 school year.

I sincerely wish our faculty, staff, and school families all God's blessings for a faith-filled and academically excellent school year!

Meet Our New and Returning Faculty & Staff
We are very happy to welcome new and returning faculty and staff members for the 2016-2017 school year!

Mrs. Loretta Hensley has come out of retirement to resume her former position as Saint Dominic School's music teacher! Although Mrs. Hensley continued to serve as the Music Director for Saint Dominic Church, she was anxious to return to the classroom to continue to pass on the love of music to our students! Marking her 28th year at Saint Dominic's, Mrs. Hensley is a truly amazing musician. Check out in this newsletter all of the music activities that she offers to Saint Dominic's students and parishioners. Mrs. Hensley earned a Bachelor of Arts from Montclair State and continued her education at Georgian Court University. She holds NJ Certification as a Teacher of Music and is a member of the National Association for Music Education and National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Mrs. Hensley played tuba with the Livingston Symphony, Y Orchestra, Greater Shore Concert Band, Musical Belles, and played at the Carnegie Recital Hall. She has three children, all of whom are proud alumni of Saint Dominic School. Henry is a member of the Class of 1994, Laura is a member of the Class of 1996, and Jack is a member of the Class of 1998.

Mrs. Darlene McCormack has also taken a hiatus from retirement. Mrs. McCormack taught Spanish to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Saint Dominic School from 2011-2014 and has returned to teach Spanish to students in grades six through eight. She holds a Master in the Art of Teaching and has over 17 years experience teaching Spanish from kindergarten through high school. Mrs. McCormack is also the grandmother of Arianna, a seventh grade student in Mrs. Miller's class.

In August, Mrs. Kimberly Becker gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy! We congratulate her and her husband and wish them all God's blessings. Mrs. Becker decided to stay home to raise her children and has resigned from her position here at Saint Dominic School. We thank Mrs. Becker for her many successful years of teaching at our school. Our new first grade teacher, Miss Jennifer Molzon, is certainly not new to Saint Dominic School. Miss Molzon is a member of Saint Dominic School's Class of 2005. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Georgian Court University and was previously employed by Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission, during which she was trained in the Wilson Reading Program and provided supplemental instruction and in-class support to Saint Dominic School students.

Ms. Dianne Webb is our new upper grade math teacher. Ms. Webb served as a long-term math substitute for the seventh and eighth grades during the 2015-2016 school year. She was such an outstanding math teacher that we knew we had to hire her - fast! Ms. Webb earned her Bachelor of Science at The College of New Jersey and holds NJ Certifications in both math and elementary education. Before coming to Saint Dominic School, she taught middle school math in the Mountainside School District. Ms. Webb has three children.

Mrs. Jeanie Landau served as Saint Dominic School's second grade paraprofessional from 2012-2015 and has returned this school year to assume her former position. Before her employment at Saint Dominic School, Mrs. Landau held a career in the technology field as a manager and lead business computing analyst. She has one daughter, Taylor, who graduated from Saint Dominic School in 2015.

Miss Ashley Shanley is our new kindergarten paraprofessional and will assist Mrs. Liberatore in KA. Miss Shanley is a member of Saint Dominic School's Class of 2008. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Rutgers University and is continuing her education to pursue NJ Certification as an elementary teacher.

Mr. Steven Pricone will provide STEM labs to our first through sixth grade students. Mr. Pricone earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology from Seton Hall University and has an extensive career teaching middle school and high school science in the Riverdale Public School District and Don Bosco Technology Academy. During Mr. Pricone's career, he received ten recognition/grant awards including the Governor's Recognition Award, Teacher of the Year, and the Geraldine Dodge Foundation Grant Award, in which Mr. Pricone conducted an on-site study of the pollution in the canals of Venice, Italy!

Mrs. Nisha McFarlane resigned from her position as our school secretary at the end of June to pursue a new career path. We thank her for serving our school and wish her all the best. This past summer, we welcomed Mrs. Tracy Holler as our new secretary. Mrs. Holler holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and was employed as a graphic artist and art director. Most recently, she served Saint Mary of the Lake Parish as the CCD Coordinator and secretary. Mrs. Holler has five children, the youngest of whom, Mary Anne, graduated from Saint Dominic School this past June. Many parents may know Mrs. Holler from the countless hours she volunteered as a very active member of Saint Dominic School's P.T.A.

You will have the opportunity to welcome all of our new and returning faculty and staff members during our Back to School Nights.

Partners in Faith
Saint Dominic School is proud to offer a monthly subscription to Partners in Faith to our school families.

In the September issue of Partners in Faith, readers learn how to make a new beginning in their family's faith formation, how to teach children to see all people through God's eyes of love, and how to shore up their own faith foundation. As always, families are encouraged to attend Mass every Sunday and to make Confession as frequently as possible.

Mrs. Arnold Appointed to the Executive Board of NJAET
In January 2016, Mrs. Arnold was the winning recipient of the Dave Cochran Award of Excellence from the New Jersey Association for Educational Technology (NJAET) and received a $1000 grant to implement a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) based project at Saint Dominic School.

With the funding from the grant from NJAET, Mrs. Arnold purchased Cubelet Kits for our young learners in kindergarten - third grade. Our students used the Cubelets to experiment creating remote-controlled constructions and interactive projects using sensors and action blocks.

In May, Mrs. Arnold was asked to present a report on the success of the Cubelets project during an NJAET Executive Board meeting. The members of the Board were so impressed with Mrs. Arnold's contributions at the meeting, they nominated and later appointed her to the Executive Board!

NJAET serves educators, technology coordinators, administrators, consultants, and technology vendors. The association holds various tech events and an annual technology conference, during which participants engage in hands-on workshops, attend lectures, and learn about the newest technology trends and tools in education.

Mrs. Bathmann has served on NJAET's Executive Board since 2011. Both Mrs. Bathmann and Mrs. Arnold are proud to spread the good news of technology initiatives that are taking place within our Catholic schools and help advance 21st Century skills throughout New Jersey.

Saint Dominic School Wins Anti-Litter       Mascot Contest
Last spring, Mrs. Liguori was asked to participate in the Brick Township Anti-Litter Mascot Contest, which was open to all schools in Brick Township. Students worked as a collaborative group and took into consideration their local environment when creating an idea for the mascot. We are excited to announce that our school design was chosen! May we present to you "Sunny Seagull!" Our school will be recognized at a town council meeting at the start of the school year, which will help kick off the anti-litter campaign. This is wonderful news for our school as we are renewing our efforts at recycling this year. We are happy to partner with Brick Township in educating our youth on the importance of recycling and a clean community.

Saint Dominic School Current Student & Alumni Perform in BCCT's Summer Production

This summer they went "under the sea" at the Strand Theater with Disney's, The Little Mermaid, on July 29th, 30th and 31st.  Saint Dominic School is proud to announce the following students/alumni were featured in the production: Corey Barthelemy, Class of 2015 (Sebastian), AnnieRose Dimurro, Class of 2014 (Scuttle), Taylor Landau, Class of 2015 (Sailor, Squid, Maid, Flamingo, Princess), Liam Mailley, Class of 2015 (Pilot, Stone fish, Cattails), Michael Luckowec, Class of 2013 (King Triton), and Searra VanDerveer, Class of 2019 (Fish,Turtle).

National Assessment of Educational Progress
Saint Dominic School has been selected to represent private schools across the nation by participating in the 2017 administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is the largest national measure of student achievement across the country. Since 1969, NAEP has provided valuable information on student achievement to policymakers, educators, and the general public.

During this 2016-2017 school year, selected fourth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in NAEP. Results from their assessments will be combined with those of other students across the United States and released as The Nation's Report Card. The report card presents NAEP results and helps decision makers develop policies that better serve the needs of our nation's students in both public and private schools.

By participating in NAEP, our students will set a positive example for their peers by practicing good citizenship and contributing to data that serve to improve and strengthen the educational options for all of our nation's youth.

Back to School Nights

Back to School Nights are scheduled for September 13th and 14th.  Parents of students in PreK through third grade are asked to attend on Tuesday, September 13th, and parents of students in fourth through eighth grade are asked to attend on Wednesday, September 14th. The program for both nights will begin with a general meeting in the Parish Center at 7:00 P.M. followed by classroom visits and presentations.

Representatives from our local Diocesan Catholic high schools, including Christian Brothers Academy, Donovan Catholic, Mater Dei, Red Bank Catholic, St. John Vianney, and St. Rose, will attend our Back to School Night on September 14th. They will be available in the Parish Center from 6:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. to provide information regarding academic and extracurricular offerings as well as open house information to parents who wish to continue their children's Catholic education upon eighth grade graduation.

The P.T.A. will be hosting a Uniform Exchange during both Back to School Nights. Any gently used, clean, current uniforms would be appreciated. Please stop by the tables and take what you need. You do not need to bring uniforms in order to take some. The P.T.A. encourages everyone to "shop" the exchange!

Contact Information

It is imperative that all parents update

emergency contact information in the Honeywell Instant Alert system. Please

remember, it is the parent/guardians' responsibility to keep this information current and accurate. When there is a change in a family's address, phone number, or email, parents are asked to change the information in Honeywell and call the school office so that the information can be changed in our school's database system.

September Lunch Menu

Saint Dominic School provides a hot food service program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Complete lunch meals may be purchased daily for $3.50. Multiple meal tickets for ten or twenty days may be purchased in advance. The price for ten meals is $35 and $70 for twenty meals. Meal tickets may be purchased any school day. Tickets remain at school and are distributed as needed. Please note that tickets are for complete meals only and may not be used to purchase snacks. All checks must be made payable to St. Dominic SchoolParents are asked to include the student's name and homeroom on the check.

Food Allergies

Parents are asked to be mindful of our school children who have severe food allergies. Please help us to keep all children safe while at school by noting the following:

  • Only appropriate non-food items will be distributed to students to celebrate a child's birthday.
  • Refrain from sending in products containing peanuts or nuts for snacks to be eaten in the classroom. (Students eat in their classrooms on Friday due to Bingo. If children bring lunches containing nuts on a Friday, they will be required to purchase lunch from the cafeteria.)
  • Encourage your children to wash their hands after food handling.
  • Children may bring their choice of food for lunch in the cafeteria. Please encourage your children to avoid the sharing of food, drinks, and utensils.
  • If your children sit at a designated peanut/nut free table in the cafeteria and bring peanut/nut products, they will be asked to sit at another table.
  • Please avoid the use of food in school projects.
Technology Acceptable Use Policy

Saint Dominic School adheres to the Technology Acceptable Use Policy written by the Department of Catholic Education. This policy is found in the Diocese of Trenton Handbook for Policies and Practices for Elementary and Secondary Schools and on our school's website under the "Current Parents" link. All administrators, teachers, support personnel, and students must read and agree to abide by the provisions of the Technology Acceptable Use Policy.

Please click here to read the full policy on acceptable use.

Early Dismissal and Absentee Policies

Saint Dominic School discourages early dismissals during the school day as they interfere with the instructional process. In the event that an emergency arises that an early dismissal is necessary, a written request from a parent or guardian must be submitted on or before the requested dismissal. Please do not request an early dismissal after 2:00 P.M. on full days or 12:00 P.M. on early dismissal days.

To receive the maximum benefit from classroom and instructional participation, it is important that children report to school each day. Illness of the student, death in the family, and exceptional instances that affect the child are the only legitimate excuses for absence from school. A written note from a parent or guardian
stating the date(s) and reason of absence must be presented upon the child's return to school.

Please click here for Student Absence Note

Transportation Safety

Parents who choose to drive their children to school each day must park their cars in the parking lot and walk their children into the school gymnasium. No cars are permitted in the circle or on the road in front of the school at arrival or dismissal. Only handicapped persons may park in the spaces designated for handicapped drivers. Students being driven to school should arrive before the buses disembark at 8:20 A.M., but not before 8:00 A.M.

Anytime a student's method of transportation is changed, a note must be sent to the homeroom teacher. Children sometimes have difficulty in remembering last-minute changes. Only authorized students may ride buses that are assigned to them. This means no student may go home on a different bus when visiting a friend's house after school. Parents are advised to read Brick Transportation's Bus Policy, which can be found on our school website under the "Current Parents" link.
