Lent

Lent began on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. Lent is a special time to show Jesus, our Savior, how much we love him. We remember that Jesus died on the cross. Jesus made this sacrifice for us. We make sacrifices to thank Jesus for His love. A sacrifice is a gift we give to God to give Him thanks. When we make a sacrifice, we give up something important. Giving something up during Lent can take us in one of two directions. It can eliminate the desire for what we have given up, thus making more room for God in our lives. Or, it can create a stronger desire for what we gave up so that when we return to it, we appreciate it all the more and thank God for the blessing. Either option can bring us closer to God; this is the real point of Lent.

GUIDELINES FOR FASTING DURING LENT

ABSTINENCE is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.

FASTING, in addition to abstinence, is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. NOTE: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

Stations of the Cross

The children in Grades K through 8 will have the opportunity to walk the Way of the Cross during Lent. This is a beautiful way for all Christians to prepare for Easter. The entire school will pray the Stations on the following Fridays: March 14th at 1:50 P.M., March 21st at 1:05 P.M, March 28th at 1:50 P.M., and April 11th at 1:05 P.M. Our fifth grade students will reenact the Live Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday morning, April 17that 9:30 A.M. and 10:45 A.M. in the Gym and again on Good Friday, April 18th at 7:00 P.M. in the Church. Please join us!

Pi Day
Students at Saint Dominic School will be celebrating Pi Day today, March 14th. A variety of activities will be happening during math classes. Everything from art projects and poems to reading "math adventure" stories and doing Pi calculations will take place. Some of the day's highlights include the second graders making a Pi chain and stories from the Sir Circumference series by Cindy Neuschwander being read to students in the first through sixth grade classes. Sixth through eighth students will bring in items to measure both circumference and diameter and use this information to calculate Pi. Some students are currently working on Pi Day projects so that they can present the history of Pi and recite the first 100 digits of Pi on Pi Day. Original stories and poems are also in the works. Our youngest students will be creating circle-related art projects. So enjoy Pi Day whether it is reading about Pi, singing about Pi, or just enjoying some pie for dessert!

Saint Dominic School Celebrates St. Patrick's Day

Saint Dominic School will celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Monday, March 17th.  All students in grades PreK - eighth may dress down in green attire.

Ten of our eighth grade students will attend a special Catholic School Liturgy celebrated by Bishop O'Connell at St. Mary's Cathedral on St. Patrick's Day. One of our eighth graders, Jack Coleman, has been selected by the Department of Catholic Schools to read the Universal Prayer during the Mass. This is a honor for Jack and his family, as well as our entire school community. Good luck, Jack!

Career Day

On Friday, April 11th, the fifth through eighth grade students will participate in a "Career Day."   This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see what it takes to become successful in a chosen field. Our St. Dominic parents, relatives, and community members volunteer to present career overviews.  Students rotate through the classrooms for twenty-minute sessions to meet the speakers and learn what it takes to attain career success. Every year the students meet a wonderful group of professionals and come away with useful career information.
