Support the MRHS

Before we get into the meat of Newsletter 54 we must remind all True Believers of two things they already know:

1. We're an all volunteer organization

2. Keeping two major radio facilities functioning is amazingly expensive

None of what you see in this Newsletter and in past Newsletters would be possible without the vision, trust and faith of True Believers around the world.  Here's a good example:

We have many Watkins-Johnson WJ-8718 communications receivers in service.  These are considered premium receivers and were very expensive when originally purchased.  They still demand high prices today.  However after decades of service these receivers have become difficult and expensive to repair.  We do our best to maintain them in-house but the reality is that we often need to send them to the one remaining facility that still has the parts and skill needed to keep these receivers running.  Needless to say this is an expensive process.  But we feel that keeping the original KPH equipment on line and working is a major part of what our project is about.

Roy Henrichs of the Maintenance and Operations Departments attempts to resuscitate a
WJ-8718 receiver using the original test gear in the KPH shop

If you can consider a donation to the MRHS it would be tremendously appreciated and will keep the WJ-8718s and the other equipment in our charge in working condition.  And remember, we're a 501(c)3 non-profit organization so your donation is completely tax deductible.  And it's easy! > Mini Night of Nights 2016 February 6!

Faithful readers of these pages will recall that in November 2015 KSM participated in what we called a mini-Night of Nights. This was a MF oriented event conducted in cooperation with the US and Canadian amateurs who are active in that part of the spectrum. We had a great time and judging from reports (see Newsletter No. 53), listeners did too. So when another event was scheduled for February 2016 we naturally wanted to be part of it. Here's the scoop:

On 6 February 2016 Pacific time Maritime Radio Historical Society station KSM will conduct a "mini Night of Nights" oriented specifically toward medium frequency transmissions. We will extend the KSM operating hours well into the evening our time to give as many listeners as possible the opportunity to hear our medium frequency signals. All our HF channels will be active as well. MRHS amateur station K6KPH will be guarding its usual channels for KSM signal reports and general contacts. Here are some details:

KSM will continue operations past 0000Z on these frequencies (in kc):

426
500
4350.5
6474.0
8438.3
12993.0
16914.0
22445.8

K6KPH will guard:

3550.0
7050.0
14050.0
18097.5
21050.0

Senior Morse operator Mike Payne will be standing by for your call.  And yes,
he will be wearing the eyeshade

Numerous US medium frequency experimental stations will be active for this event. Canadian stations will be on the air too. Our ops will tune the MF band to see which of these we can monitor.  We've recently upgraded our MF reception capabilities so we hope to snag even more stations than we did last time.

Check HERE for more details from the ARRL amateur organization about the planned US and Canadian activities which will begin earlier than the MRHS operations.

MRHS Transmitter Supervisor Steve Hawes plans to be aboard SS RED OAK VICTORY/KYVM using the ITT/Mackay radio console that he himself lovingly restored.  Listen for KYVM on 500kc and 425kc exchanging traffic with KSM.

Why not join us at KSM to share the fun? You're invited to visit with us at the receive site, 17400 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in the Point Reyes National Seashore.

The station telephone number is +1 415-669-9646 (answered only when the station is staffed).

Got a commercial radiotelegraph ticket? Sit the circuit at KSM and get your license endorsed as a coast station operator with our special endorsement stamp. Want to sit the circuit at K6KPH? No problem, no license required, just a working knowledge of Morse. It you have an amateur license bring that along and we'll endorse it for operation at K6KPH.

If you've read this far here's your reward: visit us and whisper the words "true believer" to be granted access to our special equipment storage area. We call it the Treasure Room.

> Frank Geisel's Report No. 5 , October 1946

Bill Meloney returns.  Bill, who came to be the most beloved and  best Morse operator at KPH, has returned to service.  As a Quaker, he could have sat out WWII.  But he enlisted in the Merchant Marine, where the casualty rate was as high as in direct combat.  In fact Bill was torpedoed - twice!  But he survived both times and served several decades at KPH.

The story of submarine U-123, which sank one of Bill's ships, is told in Operation Drumbeat.  We have a copy of the book endorsed by Bill.

Bill's story is presented in a special program called "Radio is Magic" carried over KWMR, the community radio station located near the Point Reyes receive site.  This program is available on line in two parts for your listening plesure.  Don't skip the second part as that's where Bill's story is told.
