Greetings!

Welcome to the fifth newsletter of the Shared Decision Making (SDM) program. In this newsletter you will find: updates to the available video programs, new shared decision making projects, practice-specific prescription data, upcoming events, and useful resources and links.

The Shared Decision Making Program is sponsored by the MGH Health Decision Sciences Center and John D. Stoeckle Center. We strive to provide high-quality health information to promote active and shared decision-making in clinical care at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

We appreciate your feedback as we continue to expand and improve upon our program work.

Sincerely,

Karen Sepucha, Leigh Simmons, Lauren Leavitt

Shared Decision Making and Back Pain Care ReDesign

The Shared Decision Making team was recently awarded the MGH Clinical Innovations Award to conduct a research project examining the impact of the introduction of a patient educational tool and clinician decision support at the time of diagnosis for patients with acute low back pain (ALBP) presenting at the Medical Walk-In Clinic and the IMA Urgent Care Clinic.

The MAP Study (Managing expectations for Acute low back Pain Study) aims to improve patient decision quality, confidence in ability to self-manage acute low back pain as well as satisfaction with symptoms, and to reduce the number of inappropriate imaging studies and specialty referrals for ALBP.

Pre-Visit Updates

Patients were provided the option to order programs prior to an upcoming appointment in the IMA pods 7&8, along with MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center and the Waltham Primary Care Associates. In general, patients order twice as many decision aids as clinicians in the practice. The Help for Anxiety and Peace of Mind programs are most commonly ordered by patients.

Revere HealthCenter has also begun allowing patients to order programs prior to their clinic visit. Managing Chronic Low Back Pain and Help for Anxiety are most commonly ordered among these patients.

Take a look!  Here is a quick view of the shared decision-making video prescription data from the last quarter (January - March, 2013). We've provided an update displaying how each care team compares to other practices across MGH.
