Greetings!

Happy new year! Welcome to the fourth newsletter of the Shared Decision Making (SDM) program. In this newsletter you will find: updates to the available video programs, new shared decision making projects, practice-specific prescription data, upcoming events, and useful resources and links.

The Shared Decision Making Program is sponsored by the MGH Health Decision Sciences Center and John D. Stoeckle Center. We strive to provide high-quality health information to promote active and shared decision-making in clinical care at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

We appreciate your feedback as we continue to expand and improve upon our program work.

Sincerely,

Karen Sepucha, Leigh Simmons, Lauren Leavitt

Choice Report: A new in-office shared decision-making tool

Through our work with with the internal medicine interns and residents, we've developed a new in-office shared decision-making tool called the Choice Report.

The Choice Report is a short tool designed to make shared decision making conversations easier. The Choice Report uses frequently-asked questions and answers to cover key information and helps you and your patient design a plan for treatment.

The tool is not intended to be used as a stand-alone decision aid, or to be a comprehensive set of information, but rather it is best used during the consultation to guide discussion and elicit patient preferences, goals, and concerns.

Click here to view the full Guide to Using Choice Reports in the Office Visit.  Currently, there are 4 tools available on PCOI: Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia, Hypertension, and Depression.
CRMS and Orthopedics

MGH physicians now have the option to order a decision aid when making a CRMS orthopedics referral for hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and herniated disc.  In the first two months of this project, 70% of the referrals came with a request to send a decision aid. We are still working with staff in Orthopedics to ensure the appointments are scheduled and the decision aids are ordered.

Pre-Visit Updates

Work continues in the IMA pods 7 & 8, along with the MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center and Waltham Primary Care Associates, to allow patients to order programs prior to an upcoming appointment.  We continue to see about 8% of patients ordering an average of 2 video programs each. The Anxiety and Peace of Mind programs are most commonly ordered by patients.

Video Prescription Data

Take a look!  Here is a quick view of the shared decision-making video prescription data from the last quarter (October - December, 2012). We've provided an update displaying how each care team compares to other practices across MGH.
Shared Decision Making in the News

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a perspective piece by Ezekiel Emanuel, PhD and Emily Oshima Lee, MA addressing shared decision making and implications for greater use in health care: Shared Decision Making to Improve Care and Reduce Costs. Click here for the full article.
