Greetings!

Welcome to the third newsletter of the Shared Decision Making (SDM) program.  In this newsletter you will find: updates to the available video programs, new shared decision making projects, practice-specific prescription data, upcoming events, as well as useful resources and links.

The Shared Decision Making Program is sponsored by the MGH Health Decision Sciences Center and John D. Stoeckle Center. We strive to provide high-quality health information to promote active and shared decision-making in clinical care at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

We appreciate your feedback as we continue to expand and improve upon our program work.

Sincerely,

Karen Sepucha, Leigh Simmons, Lauren Leavitt

Pre-Visit Updates

MGH physicians now have the option to send a decision aid to a patient when placing a CRMS orthopedics referral for hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and herniated disc.   The CRMS team has added this video order option to the orthopedic referral page.  Orthopedics office staff will order the decision aid at the time of scheduling the consultation.

Work continues in the IMA pods 7 & 8, and soon with the Charlestown Health Center, to offer programs to patients prior to their upcoming appointment.  In these practices, patients can order decision aids to be mailed to their home in advance of their annual visits.

Shared Decision Making and Communication Skills in
Resident Training

The Shared Decision Making team was awarded a grant from the Picker Institute/Gold Foundation Graduate Medical Education Challenge for the proposal entitled, Shared Decision Making in Medication Prescriptions: Improving Communication Skills and Professionalism for Internal Medicine Residents.

Work has already begun on the project which aims to develop and evaluate a training program for internal medicine residents to enhance communication skills and promote shared decision making with their patients in all clinical interactions, with a specific focus on decision making and counseling about medications for chronic conditions.

Shared Decision Making in the News

The American Medical Association's recent article: Patients' medical decisions benefit from DVD guidance quotes both Karen Sepucha, PhD, and Creagh Milford, DO.  The article details how decision aids inform patient choice and often correlate with a higher knowledge score.

The most recent Quality Matters newsletter reported on the use of decision aids in clinical practice across the country. The article quotes Dr. Michael Barry and Karen Sepucha, PhD, from MGH: Helping Patients Make Better Treatment Choices with Decision Aids.

The Boston Globe recently published an article in their Health and Wellness section quoting an MGH patient and Karen Sepucha, PhD: Do you really need a knee replacement?

When a patient is given a choice for CRC screening, they are more likely to choose the screening option when compared to limiting the recommendation for CRC screening to just colonoscopy. Video Prescription Data

Take a look!  Here is a quick view of the shared decision-making video prescription data from the last quarter (July - September, 2012). We've provided an update displaying how each care team compares to other practices across MGH.

We surpassed our 10,000th prescribed video since the program began in 2005 --  Dr. Valerie Stone from the IMA 7 group helped us reach this milestone!

Congratulations to the Ob/Gyn department for achieving their quality improvement measure this past quarter.  Each physician in the department prescribed one of the following decision aids:  Managing Menopause Symptoms, Treatment Choices for Uterine Fibroids, and Uterine Fibroids Treatment Choices.
