DRIVEbys: An exhibition of unconventional architecture for the most conventional thing
The Columbus Idea Foundry
Five Columbus architects developed designs for Bold Booths, an original and innovative proposal for attendant booths at downtown surface parking lots, as part of Finding Time: ColumbusPublicArt2012. Designs and models for the micro-buildings will be unveiled in the exhibition. DRIVEbys will document projects by Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design, BAWorkshop, Blostein/Overly Architects, Neal Clements, and Design Group. The exhibition is curated and designed by Beth Blostein, Associate Professor, Knowlton School of Architecture, and Bart Overly, Blostein/Overly Architects. The exhibition and reception are hosted by the Downtown Residents Association of Columbus and are open to the public. An Engagement/Impact Grant from The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement is providing primary support for this initiative and the DRIVEbys exhibition. Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District is the community partner for the program.
The curatorial team for Finding Time: ColumbusPublicArt 2012 identified a series of standard parking attendant booths as locations for fantastic riffs on these banal and re-occurring elements. Originally planned as temporary installations, the project has evolved to make these installations permanent design fixtures. Independent and spread out across the downtown core, each project will operate within site, function and economic constraints to produce transformative urban experiences. Work is now underway to construct five booths by the end of 2015. The first installation, designed by Blostein/Overly Architects, will take place at the Westin Great Southern Hotel. The second, designed by BAWorkshop, will be constructed at the Eckl Parking Company lot on the southwest corner of High and Long streets. http://www.boldbooths.org/drivebys/
