Capital Crossroads SID Notes

Bold Booths
Bold Booths is a collaboration between The Ohio State University, Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District and leading professional designers. Originally, the project was part of Finding Time: Columbus Public Art 2012, a program to install multiple public art displays across the downtown cityscape during Columbus' bicentennial. Five Columbus architects were commissioned to design parking attendant booths or stations for self-pay parking in downtown. Time and money constraints meant that only the designs were developed that year, but Malcolm Cochran, Finding Time project director and professor emeritus of Art, and Cleve Ricksecker, executive director of Capital Crossroads SID, pushed forward with the project, and the first booth will be completed this fall. Designed by Beth Blostein, Associate Professor of Architecture, and her partner Bart Overly, the booth will be located in the parking lot of the Westin Columbus - Great Southern Hotel. http://outreach.osu.edu/newslist-items/boldbooths.html

Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts 2014 Annual Meeting and Downtown Awards

Columbus State Community College Center for Workforce Development, 315 Cleveland Ave.
4 p.m., Entertainment; 4:15 p.m., Program Begins; 5 p.m. Cocktails and Conversation
How do we change the conversation when naysayers talk about old-school ways of doing business of long car commutes and hours isolated in front of glowing computer screens? Join Capital Crossroads and Discovery SIDs in welcoming Lee Fisher, President and CEO or CEOs for Cities, who will talk about what is necessary to achieve great Downtown Dividends. National trends show talented up-and-comers demand access, connectivity and flexibility, which bring good things Downtown. Lee will talk about the huge economic shifts, which occur with some surprisingly small changes. For questions and to RSVP, please contact Kathryn Hille at 614.645.5005 or kahille@sidservices.com.

DRIVEbys: An exhibition of unconventional architecture for the most conventional thing

The Columbus Idea Foundry

Five Columbus architects developed designs for Bold Booths, an original and innovative proposal for attendant booths at downtown surface parking lots, as part of Finding Time: ColumbusPublicArt2012. Designs and models for the micro-buildings will be unveiled in the exhibition. DRIVEbys will document projects by Jonathan Barnes Architecture and Design, BAWorkshop, Blostein/Overly Architects, Neal Clements, and Design Group. The exhibition is curated and designed by Beth Blostein, Associate Professor, Knowlton School of Architecture, and Bart Overly, Blostein/Overly Architects. The exhibition and reception are hosted by the Downtown Residents Association of Columbus and are open to the public. An Engagement/Impact Grant from The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement is providing primary support for this initiative and the DRIVEbys exhibition. Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District is the community partner for the program.

The curatorial team for Finding Time: ColumbusPublicArt 2012 identified a series of standard parking attendant booths as locations for fantastic riffs on these banal and re-occurring elements. Originally planned as temporary installations, the project has evolved to make these installations permanent design fixtures. Independent and spread out across the downtown core, each project will operate within site, function and economic constraints to produce transformative urban experiences. Work is now underway to construct five booths by the end of 2015. The first installation, designed by Blostein/Overly Architects, will take place at the Westin Great Southern Hotel. The second, designed by BAWorkshop, will be constructed at the Eckl Parking Company lot on the southwest corner of High and Long streets. http://www.boldbooths.org/drivebys/
