Farm-fresh peaches won't be around long so plan to load up at Pearl Market this week. The bounty of fresh produce awaits from tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and onions to local cheeses, lamb, pork, beef, chicken and eggs. Don't forget the hand-crafted merchandise and delicious food. Traffic Alert

 

Neil Ave. and Vine St. Improvement Project

Motorists should expect lane closures on Neil Ave. between Nationwide Blvd. and Spruce streets and on Vine St. between Michigan Ave. and Neil Ave. Traffic will be maintained on Neil Ave. and Vine St. The project includes roadway widening, streetscape and utility improvements and new sidewalks. The work is expected to be complete by late October, weather permitting.

Discovery District Beach Volleyball

The Discovery District in Downtown Columbus has announced a new neighborhood sand volleyball court located across Grant Ave. from the new Hills Market Downtown and Grass Skirt Tiki Bar and Restaurant. The Grant Ave. parking lot on which the volleyball court is built was generously provided by CCAD. Haunted Statehouse Tour Tickets Go On Sale

Tickets for the popular Haunted Statehouse Tour go on sale on September 9. These tickets usually sell out fairly quickly. MadLab Auditions

MadLab is seeking male and female actors 18 and older for its latest production, WALL by J.R. Spaulding, Jr. Auditions will take place on September 21 from noon to 3 p.m. at 227 N. 3rd St. WALL will be presented on December 5 - 7, 13 - 14 and 20 - 21. Auditions will be readings from the script, but monologues are welcome. Head shots are not required but are appreciated. Open House: Marconi Blvd. and Front St. Two-Way Conversion

September 12, 4 - 6 p.m.

City of Columbus, 109 N. Front St., first floor conference room

The City of Columbus is continuing with plans to convert traffic flow from one-way to two-way on Marconi Blvd. and Front St. between Broad St. and Hickory St. This project is currently in the design phase, with construction tentatively scheduled for spring 2014 if funding becomes available. Public input is encouraged during the design phase. The project is expected to improve traffic flow, provide better connectivity to the City's Traffic Management Center, and assist pedestrians, bicyclists and mobility- and vision-impaired individuals. Representatives from the City of Columbus and design consultant Burgess & Niple will be on hand at the meeting to answer questions in an open house format. No formal presentation will be given. Kelton House Museum Seeks Docents

The Kelton House Museum, a community service of the Junior League of Columbus, is seeking trainees to give tours of the museum. Costumed docents give tours to adults and children that focus on everyday life during the Victorian era, local history, the Underground Railroad and the Kelton family. The training date for new docents is Saturday, September 14 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Training includes an extensive docent manual and tour scripts. Trainees will shadow experienced docents. Docents are required to docent six times per year (tours are available days, evenings and weekends); become a Friend of the Kelton House; and attend the September 26 docent chat and at least one other docent chat per year. OSU Urban Arts Space

Ohio State University Classics professor Richard Fletcher curates the first exhibition of the work of photographer Donald Lokuta to explore the shared themes between two series of works, juxtaposing Lokuta's painted photographs based on Plato's analogy of the cave with large-scale photographic prints of the studio of sculptor George Segal. This exhibit features an original work by George Segal on loan from the Columbus Museum of Art collection.

Columbus Art Walk

Columbus Public Health has partnered with Columbus Landmarks Foundation to offer no-cost guided tours of Columbus Art Walk sites. The tours will take place every Monday at 7 p.m. from June 10 - October 28. Each tour will be about an hour and they will cover 10 to 15 sites in depth. No registration is required.

 

City Center Gallery Exhibition: Surthrive in the Heartland

Exhibition: September 17 - October 19

The Lazarus Building's rooftop garden collects the strongest and most resilient plants from all corners of the earth and brings them to the heartland. Located in the historic Lazarus building, City Center Gallery has had its own bout with endurance. Sponsored by The Arts Initiative, City Center will draw inspiration from the self-sustaining plants located on the green roof and show how it too can thrive through the winter. City Center calls local and emerging artists to interpret, recreate or be inspired by one of 25 plants on Lazarus's green roof and their ability to "surthrive." http://www.uas.osu.edu

Jeff Smith is best known for his all-ages comic Bone, but his past five years have been devoted to RASL, a science fiction adventure for adults. It is the epic tale of a hard-drinkin, anti-hero art thief who jumps back and forth between parallel worlds to discover the secrets of famed scientist Nikola Tesla, as well as of his own life. This exhibition looks at the influences behind RASL, including music, literature, process artwork and sculptural manifestations of the narrative. http://www.ccad.edu

Recognized as one of the most significant and influential founders of the Los Angeles punk aesthetic, artist and designer Gary Panter has wielded his "punk, nuclear, hillbilly" sensibility in the art world since the late 1970s. Using his characteristic jagged line and raw brushstroke, he presents chaotic, image-strewn landscapes as well as more axiomatic works that center on film archetypes. http://www.ccad.edu

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission will host a no-cost Center for Energy & Environment Forum featuring a presentation by North Market Executive Director Rick Harrison Wolfe on renovation and long-term grown plans for the market, and the regional food system that will help fuel that growth. Wolfe will discuss the Market's efforts to promote local food, local ingredients, culinary training and nutrition education.
