EducationReadinessOur 2014 Campaign is in Full Swing!

The 2014 United Way of Central Virginia Campaign has officially Kicked-Off!

Beginning with this campaign, our first Community Impact Issue, under the building block of EDUCATION, will be Education Readiness. This issue is something that impacts all of us in so many ways. United Way of Central Virginia will be focusing on families with children from birth through the 3rd grade, with particular emphasis on ages 0-5, to provide them with the skills they need to be successful.

We are pleased to have the support from each of our area school superintendents as well as several primary school teachers who understand the importance of Education Readiness. You may have already seen these teachers on our billboards and roadside signs showing support for this initiative.  Please help us give thanks to these teachers for assisting us in bringing the issue of Education Readiness to our community. We THANK YOU!!

ReadForTheRecordRead for the Record
October 21, 2014 is national Read for the Record Day, the one day of the year when people unite to read the same book to children on the same day, to celebrate and promote literacy and school readiness.
Smart Beginnings Central Virginia (SBCV) coordinates a local participation effort. In 2013, 4,000 children had the book Otis read to them. This year, they hope to read Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells to 4,200 children.

You can help them achieve that goal by volunteering to read to a pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or first grade class, or other group of children.

When: Tuesday, October 21, donate an hour of your time between 9:00am-12:00pm

  • Public School Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade Classes
  • Child Care Centers
  • Preschool Programs
  • Family Day Homes
SBCV will provide the book. After you register to read, you will receive more details (in the next few weeks) outlining where you will read, and how to report the numbers to Smart Beginnings.

Thank you for supporting this wonderful program!

WLCWomen's Leadership Council (WLC)
The Women's Leadership Council's Fall Gathering was held September 16. Wiley|Wilson generously donated the use of their lovely social area.

WLC President, Jennifer McCarthy, and Membership Chair, Georgia Willis Fauber, updated the group of about 25 current
and perspective members about the 2014 grant process. Nineteen applications targeting childhood literacy were submitted for the $10,000 in available funds. Committees are now reading the applications; distribution will be made after January 1, 2015. Three new members joined the WLC at the gathering.

YLSYoung Leaders Society (YLS)

YLS kicked off our 2014-2015 S.O.S. (Sustaining Our Students) Backpack Program on Friday, September 19th. Our volunteers packed and sent 20 bookbags home filled with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and snacks for the weekend. These 20 bookbags are serving 32 students at Paul Munro Elementary School. We are so excited to be investing in the lives of the students at PMES, so that they can return each Monday morning with their stomachs full and are ready to learn. A BIG thank you to Food Lion, United Way staff, YLS volunteers, and PMES teachers, staff, and parents for their support.

Thanks for Your Support of Our Paper Product Drive!

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the generous people of Central Virginia. Georgia-Pacific donated 350 cases of toilet paper and 180 cases of paper cups to United Way of Central Virginia and 29 non-profit agencies in our community. This donation will offset operational costs as well as provide items for individuals struggling in our region.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank provided a truck to transport items and storage space for the distribution of items. Sam's Club provided a location for the collection of other paper products needed for the non-profit agencies. We thank each individual who purchased paper products to compliment the donation from Georgia Pacific.

Once again, Central Virginia has stepped up to meet the needs in our region. On behalf of United Way of Central Virginia, thank you to everyone who participated in this great endeavor.
