2014 Campaign Kick-Off
|
United Way of Central Virginia will officially kick-off its 2014 Annual Campaign on Thursday, September 18th at Miller Park in Lynchburg. The event will be held from 5:30-7:30pm and feature food, music and displays from United Way of Central Virginia partner agencies. We invite the public to attend and to learn more about the work United Way of Central Virginia is doing to support the health of our community, as well as our new initiative - Education Readiness (please RSVP to Amy). The Education Readiness Initiative is a collaborative effort between United Way partners and community members to reach a goal of 90% third grade reading proficiency by 2025. To find out more about the Education Readiness Initiative, visit www.unitedwaycv.org or our new Meet Jamie Facebook page.
The Kickoff event marks the start of United Way of Central Virginia's annual fundraising effort and gives the organization an opportunity to thank local companies, donors and volunteers for their generosity and commitment to our community. Under the leadership of our Campaign Chair, Dr. George Hurt, and his 2014 Campaign Cabinet, a group of civic and business leaders who volunteer to raise funds and strengthen donor relationships, United Way has expanded its campaign marketing to include the familiar United Way roadside signs, billboards, public service announcements that will air on WSET and Comcast, as well as electronic and social media sites. Be on the lookout for these billboards and signs in Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell Counties and the City of Lynchburg!
This year's campaign has received a boost from several local area companies that set the pace by running early workplace/special event campaigns. Their enthusiasm and generosity has helped to "jump start" our campaign efforts. Campaign results are still coming from the following Pacesetter businesses:
American National Bank, Appalachian Power, Belk,
Bank of the James, Harris Corporation, J. Crew, Kroger, Macy's, Moore & Giles, Scott Insurance, Target, Timken, Walmart, Westminster Canterbury, Williams Company

Join Us for TED Talks!
|
Over the summer, United Way of Central Virginia hosted monthly Opportunity Talks, short video presentations focusing on entrepreneurship followed by round table discussion.
Similarly, beginning in September, we are proud to host TED Talks discussions second Saturdays at 8:00 am at the White Hart Cafe and third Thursdays at noon at the United Way building.
TED is a nonprofit organization that features internationally-renowned speakers discussing topics in the areas of Technology, Entertainment, and Design. TED Talks are short video recordings of these discussions.
Locally hosted TED Talks present an opportunity for open dialogue about our collective vision for Central Virginia and its citizens.
New TED Talk topics will be chosen each month and moderated by United Way staff or other members of the community. Group discussion will follow.
These talks are free and open to the public. Participants are welcome to purchase the White Hart Cafe's delicious beverages and breakfast items at the Saturday morning sessions. For Thursday noon sessions, feel free to bring a bag lunch.
Registration is not required, but appreciated. For more information, contact Tracy Price or like us on Facebook.
