SD Model Makers Newsletter

Greetings!

With the holiday season approaching I want to make sure everyone is aware of the options SD Model Makers has available for ship model gifts. Our gift certificates are a nice option that allow the gift recipient the opportunity to be engaged in the model review and approval process and we also have a few models in stock that can be shipped it time for the holidays.

I'm excited to share the news that we recently delivered 225 replica ship models of the Canadian Naval Frigate HMCS Toronto (FFH 333) for use by the Toronto based True Patriot Love Foundation at their recent annual tribute dinner. The 1:440 scale, 12-inch length models with Acrylic cases, were the cornerstone auction items at the November 1st gala held by the foundation. The annual tribute dinner supports and honors members of the Canadian military and their families, wherever they may serve. The annual gala is the organization's flagship and largest charity event across the country, hosting senior-level business and political leadership. This year the event raised over $2.3 million for the fourth year in a row.

As always, I've  included some photos of several recently completed models for your enjoyment.

Smooth Sailing,

Captain Brad

Gift Certificates - Two Options

Our normal model build time is generally 14-16 weeks from receipt of the necessary photographs and support documents. Obviously this means we can't complete your model for a holiday delivery. Not to worry - we have customized gift certificates available. So you have two options: 1) order the model today, and we'll begin the building. We'll send a gift certificate for you to present at your gift exchange. Then your gift recipient can get involved in the final proof stages of the model. Or 2) purchase the gift certificate for 50% or greater of the model value, and let the gift recipient work with us from the beginning of the model build.

Either way, any boat owner will be thrilled with your gift selection. Everyone finds that commissioning a replica ship model a fun and engaging process and one which is rewarded with something will be kept forever. It will bring smiles to the faces of all who enjoyed her and discussions with those who wish they could have.

Half Hull and Transom Models - Affordable and Attractive Gifts

Our half hull models come in two levels of detail. Our "simple" model is the traditional basic hull shape and color, whereas our  "detailed" model will have many upper deck details included such as wood trim; doors, windows and ports; hand railings, stanchions and lifelines; for sailboats a section of the mast, rope clutches, winches, cleats, etc.

The transom is often the most recognizable and detailed feature on a vessel as it often carries her name and home port. Taking photographs supplied by you, we recreate our unique transom models. Each transom model is moutned on a wood base, incorporating an optional brass or silver inscription.

speedboat model
The original boat is a 1950s era speedboat. The Arno XI is a hydroplane inspired by Achille Castoldi in the early 1950s and built by Timossi Azzano's Cantieri boatyard located on Lake Como. Castoldi wanted to establish a world water speed record. He was able to persuade Ferrari to provide him with racing drivers and to supply him with a 4.5-litre, V12 Ferrari engine; the same engine that gave Ferrari his first Grand Prix victory with the Ferrari 375 F1 at Silverstone Circuit in 1951. She recently was sold for $1.5 million.
