Dear Notre Dame Families,

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and I hope you have a restful and enjoyable Easter weekend.  Easter is a great weekend to create wonderful family memories.

The Divine Mercy Novena began as a private devotion which Our Lord revealed to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska.  The words of the prayers were dictated by Christ Himself to Saint Faustina, and Saint Faustina recorded in her diary Our Lord's instructions for each day's prayer.  Christ asked Saint Faustina to recite the novena starting on Good Friday and ending on Divine Mercy Sunday, the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday). The novena can be recited at any time of the year however, and it is often accompanied by the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which Our Lord also revealed to Saint Faustina.

As you enter into the new Easter Season, I would like to encourage you and your families to pray the Divine Mercy Novena.  A novena is a series of prayers that are said for nine straight days, usually as a prayer of petition but sometimes as a prayer of thanksgiving.  The nine days recall the nine days that the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent in prayer between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday.  While the word novena comes from the Latin novem, meaning "nine," the term has also come to be used generically to refer to any lengthy series of prayers; for example, the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena which is recited for more than nine days, between the Feast of St. Andrew (November 30) and Christmas.

Prayer is powerful and can change lives.  As Lent encourages us to be more prayerful, let us continue with that spirit into the Easter Season. If you would like to pray the novena, the prayers for each of the nine days can be found at the following website: Divine Mercy Website. Instructions have been sent home with all the elementary school students regarding how to pray the Divine Mercy Novena. Middle school students have been learning about the Divine Mercy Novena during their religion class.  Next week after Wednesday's Mass we will pray part of this novena.  Please attend.
