Dear Notre Dame Friend,

            The recent news about the health challenge facing our friend and school leader, Jeff Kaftan, touches us all. In my talks with Jeff I am inspired by his faith and courage and loving care for the Notre Dame school community. He knows that he is surrounded by tremendous support and loving care. I know that you join me in praying for Jeff each and every day.

            Jeff has expressed to me that he wants to do as much as he can and that he wants the school to be normal for the children. To honor Jeff's wishes, I've reinforced to Jeff that he is and shall remain the Principal. Jeff also cares deeply for the school and understands and believes that the school needs an active leader. To that end, we've also discussed that if the time comes when he needs some time off, we will have someone serve as an assistant principal for the time needed. Our goal is to assure all of you that the wonderful experience at Notre Dame continues.

I've invited Jeff to consider letting us surround him in prayer through the healing grace of the Sacrament of the Sick. He is already receiving our prayers but this might be a blessed moment when we can come together as a deeper community of faith.

Jeff and I will continue to talk regularly about his health and about Notre Dame. I know that he is deeply touched by the support you and many others have already shown him. You are true witnesses to the special quality of a Catholic school where a caring community lives the Gospel message of Christian love. Thank you for giving me this witness as it truly touches my heart and reassures my faith.
