FAQs
Q. Since I'm getting fingerprinted and a new picture, I'm assuming I'll be getting a new card. Therefore, do I need to renew my digital certificates?
A. If you get a new card, then you will receive updated digital certificates and will not have to renew your digital certificates in accordance with the message below.

Subject: ACTION REQUIRED: Please Renew the Digital Certificates on your PIV Card (HHS ID Badge)
Dear Applicant:
You are receiving this email because you need to renew the digital certificates on your HHS Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card (sometimes called an HHS ID Badge).
ACTION REQUIRED:
For reasons explained below, please renew your digital certificates as soon as possible (preferably within the next week).
To renew your digital certificates, please follow the instructions on the NIH Smart Card website: http://ocio.nih.gov/smartcard/pages/acuinfo.aspx.
After you update your certificates, you should reconfigure your applications to use them by following the steps found at: http://ocio.nih.gov/Smartcard/Pages/NewCertificates.aspx.
BACKGROUND:
The digital certificates on your PIV Card allow you to log in, read encrypted email, and digitally sign documents. In January 2013, HHS changed certificate vendors; as a result all NIH staff must get new certificates, regardless of their expiration date.
HHS has allotted NIH a limited number of slots to support this transition. This email means that you have been allocated one of these slots. Until you renew your certificates, no one else can use that slot. To ensure that NIH completes this transition in a timely fashion, it is very important that you renew your certificates as soon as possible.

Q. When an employee or associate changes position (for example, a lab chemist becomes the lab or branch chief), should their AO update NED with the new position title?
A. Yes. The AO should update NED with the new position title, as the new position may necessitate a different or new background investigation.
