Signs Go Up Near NIH Campus Vehicle Exits to Help Badge Holders "Forget Something?" lawn signs have been on display near the vehicle exits on the NIH campus to remind badge holders to take their badges when they exit the perimeter.
The rationale for these signs is that it's probably easier to turn around inside the perimeter and retrieve your badge from your card reader than it is to wait in line at the NIH Gateway Center for a visitor badge.
By the end of March, most NIH employees, contractors and affiliates will be required to use their HHS ID Badge (PIV Card) to log on to the NIH network.
Getting in the habit of removing your PIV Card and putting it back in its card holder once you are successfully logged on is not only good computing practice, but also the most reliable way to ensure that you have your badge with you when you re-enter the NIH campus.
Use This Helpful Tip Schedule a recurring 'meeting' in your Outlook calendar that reminds you toward the end of your workday to take your PIV card with you. Hopefully this will save you a trip to the NIH Gateway Center.
Remember also to keep your password up to date since some applications will still require a username and password for login. |
ICs Can Resume Purchasing Lifecycle Work Stations Under New Department Contract
Under a recently awarded HSPD-12 System Integration Services (SIS) contract, ICs can now purchase Lifecycle Work Station equipment.
The Office of Security & Strategic Information (OSSI), HHS, recently published the pricing and ordering guide for workstation equipment and software under CLIN 0009.
The complete 2013 HSPD-12 Workstation Purchasing and Pricing Guide, including sections relating to Lifecycle Work Station equipment, can be viewed online at:

Responding to a 128K PIV Card "Expired Certificate" Message
Since the 128k PIV cards can contain prior (expired) encryption certificates, the ActivClient middleware may prompt the card holder with a message that these certificates are near or past their expiration date.
Note: ActivClient middleware automatically checks for expiring certificates after the smart card has been in the card reader for at least 20 seconds.
If the message refers only to Key Management History certificates, (i.e., your old encryption certificates), select the 'Do not remind me' radio button to disable future warnings about those certificates.
However, if the message refers to 3 different types of certificates that have the same expiration date, it is time to renew the smart card certificates.
For more information, please refer to the NIH Knowledge Base article at: http://go.usa.gov/4D5z.

NED Version 3.3 Deployed
The NED project team announced that it deployed NED release v3.3 on February 4, 2013. According to the project team, this is a "major release with technological changes to increase scalability, adaptability, and data security of the NED database infrastructure."
"Since there are no user facing changes, there will be no impact to user functionality," they noted.

Keep Your Password Current to Avoid Account Deactivation
Everyone transitioning away from username & password to HHS ID Badge/PIV Card & PIN login will still need to update their password when they receive an e-mail notice that their password is about to expire. Otherwise, they will be locked out of their computer until they have updated their password, even though they may not be using their password for login.
Sign up for the NIH Password Self Service program, iForgotMyPassword, so you can always manage your password and unlock your account at:https://iforgotmypassword.nih.gov/.

Helpful TipsRenew your PIV Card's digital certificates before they expire -- the Department will notify you by e-mail 42 days before your certificates expire reminding you that you must renew your certificates. In the notification you will be advised to contact a Lifecycle Work Station operator in your IC. You will need up-to-date certificates in order to log in to your Windows computer and/or to use certain computer applications. Note: 'cert' renewals cannot be performed prior to the 42-day window. Instructions for purchasing a Lifecycle Work Station -- are now posted on the ID Badge website ( http://www.idbadge.nih.gov) under the 'What's New' section of the main page. ICs that want to add LWS operators to the approved roster -- send a written request to Richie Taffet at taffetr@mail.nih.gov. Your request should include the new operator's name, their IC, their NED #, as well as the operator's e-mail address, building/room and phone number.
Once Mr. Taffet has approved the request, he will forward the name(s) to HHSIdentityAdmins@deloitte.com to complete the approval process, add the name to the LWS operator roster, and inform the IC that the individual is now approved to operate the LWS.
Need to make changes to the LWS Operator directories? -- drop an e-mail to Lanny Newman, newmanl@mail.nih.gov, and let him know what needs changing (e.g., adding new operators or LWS locations, removing operators, etc.). Remember, before a new operator can be added to the LWS directory, s/he must first be approved by Richie Taffet (see preceding Helpful Tip).
If an LWS is not available in your IC or your immediate area, and you work in the greater Bethesda or Rockville area -- please call 301-451-4766 or 301-402-9755 to schedule an appointment with the Division of Personnel Security and Access Control located in Building 31, Room B1A26 or in Building 10, South Lobby, Room 1C52. Both locations are on the NIH main campus. If you work outside the Bethesda/Rockville area, contact your local badge issuance office.

FAQs
Q. I understand that individuals may remove their PIV Card from the card reader immediately after logging in and stay logged in as long as they continue to use their computer. Unfortunately, this is not the case for me. If I remove my PIV Card I'm immediately logged off my computer. Are there steps I can take to stay logged in after I've removed my PIV Card from the card reader?
A. Yes. Assuming your IC has no objection to your staying logged in after removing your PIV Card from the card reader, the IT Service Desk offers the following solution:
"With Administrative rights, open the ActivClient Agent console. Once the console is opened, click on 'tools,' click on 'Advanced,' and then click on 'configuration.' Once the configuration menu comes up, the first item should be 'CARD REMOVAL BEHAVIOR.' Highlight that, and in the column where it says 'value,' change that to NO ACTION! Click 'apply' and close the console. You will have to reboot for the changes to take.
Now, once you are completely logged in, your computer should NOT log you off when you take your PIV Card (HHS ID Badge) out of the card reader.
Remember, after a period of inactivity your computer will time out automatically, requiring you to log back in with your PIV Card and PIN."
