About this Conference
The causes and effects of large wildland fires are the subjects of great debate among fire researchers, managers,and policymakers. Are large wildfires unnatural events, causing great ecological harm that should be suppressed at all costs? Or could they provide opportunities to reduce fuel loads, restore altered ecosystems, and improve resiliency in the face of climate change? What are the latest research findings, management treatments, and policy initiatives addressing large wildfires? Join us for this unique event co-hosted by the Association for Fire Ecology and the International Association of Wildland Fire with support from the Joint Fire Science Program, where we will explore these questions and related issues.

Workshops
Workshops will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the University of Montana in Missoula. Workshop are half- or full-day (4 or 8 hour) training sessions on new and revised software, sampling techniques, and professional improvement. The purpose of the workshops is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in wildland fire to discuss and exchange interests on a defined topic. We view these workshops as an opportunity for Technology Transfer; the process to ensure that scientific and technological developments are accessible to a wider range of users who can then further develop and exploit them. Everyone is invited to submit a proposal for a workshop. Please submit workshop proposals to Bob Keane, rkeane@fs.fed.us by Aug. 15, 2013. Special Sessions
Special sessions may be 3-4, 5-6, or 10-12 presentations on a common topic or theme. Each presentation within the session will be 20 minutes in length with time allotted for Q&A and discussion. Proposals should consist of the title of the special session and a preliminary list of speakers and draft titles for individual talks. The number of special sessions is limited, so organizers are encouraged to submit their proposals early. Please submit special session proposals to Louisa Evers, levers@blm.gov by Dec. 1, 2013.

Wildland Fire in the Appalachians Conference
This conference is designed for anyone with an interest in wildland fire in the Appalachian Region. It promises to be unique in its approach to sharing information. First, it is a conference about wildland fire in the Appalachians that is held in the Appalachians. Second, and equally unique, is that the conference is not a research symposium and it's not a managers meeting; it's both. The objective of the Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists and the Association for Fire Ecology is for fire managers and researchers to learn from each other so they can better understand problems specific to the highly diverse Appalachian Mountains and to work together to solve those problems. We are now accepting nominations for the Stoddard Lifetime Achievement Award and our Student Excellence Awards. Nomination details, the Conference Program, and other details are on our event website.

Synopsis of the Portland Fire Congress

In Portland, Oregon during the first week in December, the sun only shined for an hour sometime on Thursday afternoon, but the weather didn't matter inside the Oregon Convention Center where 700 people from around the country and the world came together to share their common interest in fire ecology and management. The theme for this year's Fire Congress - "Uniting Research, Education, and Management" -drew participants from multiple facets of the discipline. University professors and students presented alongside agency researchers and managers with everyone racing between meeting rooms to get to their favorite speakers or topics and the lively discussions that followed presentations... We are very please to welcome 2 new members to AFE's Board of Directors. Between them they bring important regional diversity and a wide range of experiences. We are very honored to have such distinguished and accomplished individuals join our board.
Ron Masters, Associate Professor of Wildland Fire Science, College of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin~Stevens Point
Dr. Masters has a long history with AFE, helping form the Southeast Chapter of AFE and playing key roles in conference organizing (conference chair, steering committee member, sponsorship and fundraising, proceedings co-editor, etc.). He brings an upper midwest, Lake States and Southeast US regional perspective. His professional experiences include being a land manager, biologist, consultant, researcher, extension specialist, administrator, and academic. His diversity of experience and background will serve the board well.
David L. Martell, Professor, Forest fire management systems, Faculty of Forestry, University of Toronto
Dr. Martell brings international representation to the board and is interested in how AFE can contribute to enhancing ecosystem management from a management science perspective as well as raising awareness of fire management in boreal forest ecosystems. He has extensive academic and professional accomplishments and a wide range of experiences with professional societies and conference planning. He hopes to encourage even more students, teachers, researchers and managers to participate in AFE sponsored activities in the future.
