New Directions in Social Experiments Event Kicks off Celebration of Abt's 50th Anniversary

MIT event panelists Abt Associates began a celebration of its 50-year anniversary with an in-depth panel discussion on the latest in social experiments in the U.S. and around the world. The March 11 discussion included some of the top minds in evaluation science who explored the challenges and successes in gathering reliable evidence on whether a program works.


Abt Opens U.K. Office with Event on 
Private Sector Health

Diana R. Silimperi Abt Associates opened its office in the United Kingdom on Feb. 27 by hosting an event attended by representatives from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and other international development firms and non-government organizations. The new Abt office is designed to better serve clients in the region, including DFID.

Survey: Prisons, Jails Miss Opportunities for HIV Testing, Post-Release Treatment

Few prison systems or jails in the U.S. have comprehensive programs to provide critical services that link HIV-positive inmates to care after their release, according to a study published in Health Affairs. Because people who are incarcerated are three to five times more likely than the general population to be infected by HIV, correctional facilities play an important role in testing for HIV and linking infected people to post-release treatment services.

Abt-led Maternal & Child Health Project Transitions to Dominican Republic Government Program

The Abt Associates-led Maternal & Child Centers of Excellence project in the Dominican Republic has received the ultimate endorsement: The Dominican government is taking over the effort and using its own resources to roll it out to public and private health care facilities nationwide. The project helped reduce the number of maternal deaths in pilot hospitals by half over three years.


Abt Associates to Expand National Evaluation of i3

Abt was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Education to expand the ongoing National Evaluation of Investing in Innovation (NEi3) to include the most recent 25 grant awards made with FY 2013 funds. Investing in Innovation (i3) is a grant program aimed at supporting the implementation and evaluation of a wide range of evidence-based interventions to improve student outcomes.

Abt's international health division recently launched an e-newsletter, Global Health: Innovation to Impact. This quarterly publication will focus on how our projects are delivering on Abt's mission to improve the quality of life and economic well-being of people worldwide.

Jeffrey Lubell, director of Housing Initiatives at Abt Associates, wrote in the New York Times' Room for Debate feature that employers would benefit by financially helping employees both rent and buy housing.

  

Climate Change Brings More Crime 
A news article in the L.A. Times discussed a study by Matthew Ranson, associate and scientist at Abt Associates, which found that global warming will trigger more crimes - such as murders and rapes - over the next century, with social costs estimated to run as high as $115 billion.
 
How to Fight Rising Heroin and Opiate Use
Abt Associates Principal Scientist Dana Hunt, Ph.D. - who has conducted research in the areas of crime and addictions for more than 30 years - wrote in an op-ed  for the Boston Globe that reducing heroin and opiate use will require identifying these new, sometimes rural opiate users and making treatment accessible to them.
