Evaluations of U.S. Food Programs Show Reductions in Childhood Hunger and Improvements in Nutrition

summer food service The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and partner states that administer food assistance programs have responded to the needs of Americans by creating pilot projects and reforms to reduce household food insecurity and encourage people enrolled in the programs to buy and eat more fruits and vegetables. 

Abt Associates - with decades of experience designing and carrying out complex research for the USDA - studied three such interventions. One intervention that had a primary goal of reducing food insecurity among households with children during the summer showed substantial success. Two other interventions showed promising findings, in that they appeared to encourage program participants to make healthier choices.

ATN Plus Increases Access to Life-Saving Interventions in Mali

The Abt Associates-led Assistance Technique Nationale (ATN) Plus project, the flagship project of USAID's health strategy in Mali, was launched in October 2008 to improve the availability and quality of high-impact health services to vulnerable Malians.


ATN Plus - which built on a previous Abt-led, five-year project - implemented a strategy which focused on evidence-based interventions that led to measurable improvements in Mali in family planning use, maternal health, child health, and malaria prevention and treatment. The project contributed to a near-doubling of the number of new users of modern family planning methods between 2009 and 2012.

Event Highlights Abt's Leadership in Developing International Climate Change Policy

Kit Batten A day-long workshop in Washington D.C. explained lessons learned from USAID's Analysis and Investment for Low-Emission Growth (AILEG) project, led by Abt Associates, to people working in climate change strategy overseas. The two-year project focused on climate change data management, economic and financial analysis and policy development.

Survey: Half of all Pregnant Women Getting Flu Shots; Vaccination Rates Increase for Health Care Personnel

pregnant woman and childAbout half of all pregnant women and 72 percent of health care personnel are getting recommended flu vaccinations, according to two separate surveys from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted by Abt Associates. The surveys tracked influenza vaccination coverage among pregnant women and health care workers during the 2012-2013 flu season.

Abt Associates Awarded $27M Contract to Provide Economic and Environmental Analytical Support to EPA's Office of Water

EPA's office of water Abt Associates will provide a wide range of economic and environmental assessment and regulatory support to the Effluent Limitations Guidelines and other surface water protection programs of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water under a five-year, $27.6 million contract.
