USDA's Summer Food Demonstration Program Helps Combat Child Hunger, Study Finds 
   
  A government demonstration program to provide school-age children from  low-income households with meals and snacks during the summer months showed a  33 percent decrease in the rate of very low food security in the  demonstration's second year, according to a new study conducted by Abt and Mathematica Policy Research. 
  
The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children demonstration,  funded by the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, is aimed at reducing childhood  hunger during the summer, when children may not have access to the free-  and reduced-priced school meals that they receive during the school year.

Study Estimates that 4.3 Million Prescriptions for Painkillers Were Diverted to Illicit Use by  
"Doctor Shoppers" 
  
  Almost one percent of all buyers of addictive pain medications in the U.S. were estimated to be "doctor shoppers" who bought large amounts, presumably for illicit use, according to a study from Abt Associates published in the journal PLOS ONE. This is the first national estimate of opioid medications obtained by persons who seek prescriptions for the same drugs from different physicians without telling them about other prescribers.

 Wajibika Project Strengthens Local Leadership in Tanzania 
  
   Wajibika, an Abt Associates-led, USAID-funded initiative, has provided support and resources to the government of Tanzania over the past couple of years. Under the country's Decentralization by Devolution program, the project has helped the government strengthen local authorities and their management capacity.   
  
Wajibika, which means "be accountable" in Kiswahili, assists the country's local councils with their planning, financial management, procurement, and audit practices. The project's efforts have created major improvements in communities across Tanzania.

  Abt Associates' GxAlert  Initiative can greatly improve the TB test reporting times and information  sharing from GeneXpert rapid TB testing machines, hundreds of which are being  deployed around the world. GxAlert is housed in a USB drive modem and can be set  up on GeneXpert-brand rapid testing machines in 15 minutes.
