C Square Farm was out in full force for The Maryland Horse Trials (July 13-14th, Adamstown, Maryland). Courtney competed four horses, and our summer working students also had the chance to get their horses out. Courtney and Who's a Star ("Tag") competed at Intermediate - Tag's first time out since the Jersey Fresh 3-Star in May. They put in a strong dressage test, coming out 1st of 17 competitors, and they were clear in stadium jumping. Courtney was trying a new bridle for cross-country. Unfortunately, it didn't work quite like it had in practice, and they had a few stops.
Tag - XC Maryland (I) - July 2013
Courtney and R Star ("Hope") competed at Preliminary, and after dressage they were tied for 2nd place. Both 2nd place pairs were clear in stadium and cross-country, so the tie-breaker was their cross-country times. While Courtney and Hope were under the optimum time, they ended their day in 3rd.
Hope - SJ Maryland (P) - July 2013
Courtney and Sport made their move up to Training this same weekend. They put in a good dressage test and started their day 5th of 18 competitors. They followed that with a single rail in stadium jumping. They had a couple green stops on cross-country when Sport got very distracted by all of the obstacles around the bank complex. They got over on their third attempt and finished the rest of the course without any problems. Courtney and Rock Star ("DJ") also made a move up, and DJ completed her first Novice.
Sport - Dressage Maryland (T) - July 2013
Summer working students, Haley Glofka and Maddie Carey, were also able to get out and compete at the Maryland Horse Trials - both at Novice. Haley rode Aristotle ("Arti") and Maddie rode Mother's Day Angel. They both came out of dressage with a 34.8 which tied them up for 8th. With a few stadium jumping penalties each, and clear cross-country runs, they ended their days up in 12th and 13th place, respectively.
For the weekend of July 27-28th, the team got an early start (3am!) and headed to the New Jersey Horse Park Horse Trials #2 in Allentown, New Jersey. Courtney and Tag competed at Intermediate. They led their division after dressage with a 26.4 and were clear in stadium jumping to hold their lead going into the cross-country. With Tag competing Advanced at the Millbrook HTs (August 1-4), Courtney intentionally kept him a little slow and, with a few cross-country time penalties, they finished up in 2nd.
Tag - SJ New Jersey (I) - July 2013
Courtney and Hope competed at Preliminary. They put in a fabulous dressage test - with the best score of any division, a 23.6! The pair was still in 1st after stadium jumping despite a single rail, and ran clear cross-country to bring home the blue ribbon!
Hope - Dressage New Jersey (P) - July 2013
Sport continues to gain experience at Training level. He and Courtney were in 9th place coming out of dressage. They had two rails in stadium jumping, and a clear cross-country round, to finish just outside the ribbons. DJ had her first "away event" experience, and she and Courtney competed at Novice on Sunday. She did well in dressage and had a few rails in stadium jumping, but was very brave cross-country! She dealt with the distractions of cross-country well; paths in the woods, people, etc, but they did have a green stop and finished just outside of the ribbons.
DJ - XC New Jersey N - July 2013
Our working students were able to get out and compete again, as well - both at Novice. Haley and Arti were 9th coming out of dressage. They had a single rail in stadium and were clear around cross-country with just a little time, finishing just out of the ribbons. Maddie and Mother's Day Angel were 8th after dressage but, unfortunately, were eliminated in stadium jumping.
August 1-4 brought Courtney and Tag to the Millbrook Horse Trials (Millbrook, New York) to ride in the Advanced division. They put in a competitive dressage test, scoring a 32.8 and placing them 7th out of 46 at the end of the first day. They also put in a good stadium jumping round on Sunday, adding a single rail, to complete the Millbrook Advanced. For Saturday's cross-country, Courtney was still working to find the right mix of bridle, and they had a few kinks on course. But, it was very educational and parts of the course were very good. Changes in tack always take some getting used to, and how things work in schooling are not necessarily how they will work on competition day, so you learn, adjust, and look forward. In this case, forward is still the goal of Fair Hill CCI3* this October.

My Tip this Month is ...
When you're traveling to a show, or even just a schooling day, make sure you pack your trailer so that your emergency supplies for your horse, and yourself, are readily accessible. You've put in the time making the perfect first aid kit, but it isn't much help when it is buried at the very front of your dressing room. We never want to think about having to break our first aid kits open, but if you ever have to, you want it to be easy to grab.
Also, make sure to check your tires for pressure - and that includes the spare! You also want to check the cap over the axel when you stop. If your bearings are running hot you want to be able to do something about it before it becomes a real emergency!

The No. 3 Symphony Rose Breeches are made from Tredstep's Evolution fabric with added nanosphere. The TS Evolution fabric uses the latest technology in microfiber, cotton and stretch yarns providing 4-way stretch with excellent shape retention ensuring a long-term secure, comfortable, fit. This high performance fabric has a durable outer surface with a soft skin friendly feel on the inside. The Schoeller Nanosphere fabric is ushering in a new era in clothing, this natural non-stick and self-cleaning process is transferred to the surface of the fabric by means of nano-technology. The result is NanoSphere. Splashes and annoying stains don't have a chance, Ketchup, honey, coffee, red wine, oil and grease, as well as water of course, simply run off the nano-surface, even after numerous washes.
Other Great Features Include:
Integrated Cuff: Scrolled patterns and butterfly seams contour the lower leg shape to provide a superior fit and reduce bunching of fabric at the back of knee. The Integrated Cuff design accommodates varying calf sizes, streamlines and elongates the leg producing a secure feel with full freedom of movement.
Definition Waistband: The Tredstep Symphony waistband improves the definition of the waist, which is noticeably more flattering to the rider. It is designed using circular pattern techniques which results in a smooth curved fit through the riders lower back eliminating annoying gaping and belt pulling.
Articulated Knee:The upper area of the knee patch is lightly padded for increased comfort against the saddle, and the lower area, which is inside the rider's boot, is scalloped to reduce bulk and aid in the flexion of the knee. The Symphony Knee Patch maintains the front curve and look of the traditional knee patch but it has been specifically designed in terms of shape, stitch articulation, and graded padding to actively aid the unrestricted bending and flexion of the rider's knees.
