Landmark Implement longstanding business leads industry in new technologies.
By Jean Issler
Landmark Implement is a longstanding Holdrege business that leads the industry in the newest technologies. This business is chosen by John Deere to pilot and implement new software and technology developments.
The business started as McClymont Implement when Clyde McClymont and his son, Richard, purchased it in 1947. Today the company is a multi-location, innovative operation selling and servicing John Deere equipment. . Although the implement dealership is still on the west edge of Holdrege on Highway 6, the corporate headquarters are on Brewster Road, near the airport.
Alex McClymont, the fourth generation of the McClymont family in the business, said having the corporate offices in a separate building helps everyone streamline their work and makes the company more efficient overall.
The building was originally occupied by Brown Construction. The shop area now works well for training staff and producers on field equipment. The front offices are spacious and comfortable for staff.
The rear part of the building contains a large conference room and large training room that are used, like the shop, by both staff and customers. Alex said both rooms are equipped with electronics that make meetings, presentations and training sessions optimal.
From this center for the business comes leadership that brings the latest technologies to crop producers. For some time, tractors have existed that steer themselves through fields by using GPS technology.
Landmark also has Field Connect, a system that uses a sensor located in a field to send soil moisture information to the producer's computer. It analyzes and operates the irrigation equipment. The sensor lets the producer know what the field's needs are.
John Deere continues to introduce new technology to make farming more efficient. The concept of the new tech is called FarmsightŪ. Within the concept, Landmark is using Farmsight to make data access work for the producer. With open data access, Landmark can analyze by computer a breakdown in field equipment. This gives as much information as possible to a tech, who can then show up in the field with the tools and parts needed, rather than having to make multiple trips.
Just around the corner is a new technology that may assist producers in developing seed and fertilizer prescriptions and plans to more efficiently plant and apply them. Since Landmark is a proven leader in implementing and marketing new technologies, it is often selected by John Deere to be among the first dealers to have technologies ready for their customers.
Today's Landmark would hardly be recognizable by the farmers of 1947, when Clyde and Richard became sales and service people. From 1999 to 2013, the company purchased dealerships at Smith Center and Phillipsburg, Kansas, and at Minden, Lexington, Gothenburg, Elwood, Arapahoe, Shelton as well as several Zimmatic pivot irrigation dealerships.
McClymont became Landmark Implement in 2006. The leadership team now consists of Alex McClymont, Ted McClymont, Andy Grollmes, Troy Lorenzen, Greg Koster, and Jeff Mach
Landmark has a total of 13 locations and 300 employees. Fifty of the employees are in Phelps County.
With harvest over, it is time to save on parts and used equipment. Producers are encouraged to attend Landmark's auction and expos.
