Salon Bliss is Downtown Holdrege's Newest Hair Salon

available in her new business, Salon Bliss.

A commitment to natural hair products and a desire to give back to the community prompted Tina Wiese to open her new studio, Salon Bliss, two months ago.

Downtown Holdrege's newest hair salon is located in the former Holdrege Medical Clinic building. Former patients will recognize the space as the old laboratory, but not by spending time in the salon.

Salon Bliss has an attractive, comfortable décor with home-style dressing tables at the styling stations and unique lighting. Painted on one wall is a tree of life, the logo of the salon's hair products brand.

A cupboard displays the Surface product line that motivated Wiese to strike out on her own. With 18 years of hair styling experience, the last 11 here in Holdrege, she started working with the Surface company. She became an educator, traveling to teach other stylists about the line.

Wiese said the hair products are all natural so they are healthy for the customer and the environment. Packaged is done in recycled plastic. Using gentler, natural products also makes the hair stylist's job safer. Constant exposure to chemicals over the years can be a hazard.

She also likes that 20% of the proceeds on Surface products is donated to World Vision, a child sponsorship program that fights hunger. Wiese plans to give back to the local community is a similar way.

"I will have specials from time to time with proceeds being donated to the Food Bank or to benefits," said Wiese. She also plans to promote recycling. "We need to take care of the earth and be grateful for what we have."

Central to Wiese's plan are her customers. "I consider my guests as part of my family. I want to give them the best," she said. "I don't want to be average. I want to be at the top of the mountain."

Salon Bliss is a full service salon offering cuts, colors special occasion styling, waxing, perms and makeup. The salon will be carrying the Mirabella makeup line starting in March.

Wiese is working solo, but plans to add another stylist. "When the right person comes along," she said.

For now, she said she is enjoying her new space that her family helped to create. Her husband, Corey Wiese, works for Melroy Construction, so he did much of the remodeling. Their children, ages 14, 12, and 8, helped with walls, flooring and assembling chairs.

Visit the salon's Facebook page at  Salon Bliss for information on specials and products.

Salon Bliss is located at 414 East Avenue, Suite 112, Holdrege. Appointments can be made by calling 308-995-7444.

Cornhuskers among nation's most valuable football teams

(Birmingham Business Journal) -- The University of Nebraska's football team is ranked in the top ten again -- at least when it comes to Forbes list of college football's most valuable teams for 2013.  The Huskers are worth $80 million, according to the business publication.  The Texas Longhorns had the nation's most valuable football program, estimated at $139 million.  Notre Dame and Alabama were ranked No. 2 and No. 3, worth $117 million and $110 million respectively, according to Forbes.  Read more.

Nebraska facing skilled labor shortage

(NET News) --  KVNOnews.com reports on the shortage of skilled workers facing employers across Nebraska.  It is a shortage that is slowing down economic growth, says Richard Baier of the Nebraska Chamber, who points out that communities like Columbus have anywhere between 500-600 unfilled jobs.  "Baier says in addition to career centers for high school students, businesses should also reach out to retiring military personnel as a means of finding skilled labor."  Meanwhile, "Ernie Goss, an economics professor at Creighton University in Omaha, said the shortage of skilled labor stems from poor education, resulting in students who are unprepared to enter the job market."  Goss says it's "not just in terms of specific skills, it's general skills ... just knowing how to convert a fraction to a percentage."   Some school districts, like Grand Island, have turned to "career centers" -- places where students "are taught specific skills so they'll be better equipped to enter the workforce immediately after graduating."  Read more.
