New Shopko Ready To Serve The Community

By Kristine Jacobson

Shopko opened in Holdrege in early 2013 and while still learning how to best serve the community, the store has already seen many successes.

Store Manager Nathan Push said the first few months of business as Shopko Hometown in Holdrege have been as expected.

"As we learn more how to support our communities and be able to provide for its needs, we will continue to grow," he said.

The lawn and garden department this spring has helped increase sales.  "For two weeks in a row, we were in the top ten stores in the company for plant sales," Nathan said.

Typically, around 500 customers pass through the registers at Shopko on any given day with Saturdays being the busiest days.

When it's not lawn and garden season, the electronics department is the biggest draw for customers.

Nathan said Shopko is a community-minded company that likes to give back.  "Shopko's mission is to become Holdrege's 'hometown store'," Nathan said. "They continually look for ways to support the community not only by the merchandise that we carry but also by promoting and contributing to events throughout the community."

During Shopko's grand opening, it presented a check for $2,500 to Holdrege High School and most recently gave $250 to the Teammates program in Holdrege. For more information on Shopko grants, community members can visit Shopko.com and click on the Shopko Foundation link. Customers can also check out Shopko by visiting www.facebook.com/shopkofoundation.

Loyal Shopko customers can also benefit from the Shopko rewards program.  "This program is a great way for our customers to gain discounts," Nathan said. "Throughout the year, Shopko sends coupons and promotions tailored specifically to our customers who have signed up for the Shopko Rewards program based on their shopping habits."

If customers use the Shopko pharmacy, they will receive a $10 coupon for main store purchases after every 10th prescription that is filled (that is not paid for by a federally-funded program.)

"Customers will also get coupons for the anniversary of their sign-up date, their birthdays and coupons attached to certain ads that will be mailed specifically to them," Nathan said. "It is really a great way for Shopko to give back to our repeat customers and a way to say thanks for being loyal."

Nathan said 2013 will be a year of learning for Shopko. "We are open and appreciative of any feedback from our customers. Without our customers' support, we would not be here, and my personal goal as the store manager is to support this community as best as I can. Anyone can visit us at Shopko.com to give us their feedback or call me and talk to me personally (995-6514)."

Shopko is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Currently, Shopko in Holdrege employs 29 teammates between the main store and pharmacy.  "We always encourage people to apply and are continually reviewing applications," Nathan said. Application can be found at Shopko.com by clicking on the careers link.

NEW FACES AT THE CHAMBER

This summer, the Chamber's mission will be supported by three new interns, who will each be working on specific projects to move the community forward.

Sarah Vonasek will begin her senior year at Holdrege High School this fall.  Sarah will be in the office part time this summer.  Her main goal will be the continued development of YELP--Youth Engaged in Leading Phelps--a new leadership traingin and community engagement program to be offered to a select group of Phelps County sophomores beginning in January of 2014.

Also, Holdrege was one of 3 communities in Nebraska to be selected to participate in the inaugural year of the Nebraska Rural Futures Institute Internship Program.  Thus, two students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will spend their summer in Holdrege, working on our community branding and marketing efforts, with a heavy focus on video and social media.  The interns are Jordyn Lechtenberg (originally from Ainsworth, Nebraska) and Sydney Hansen (originally from Tekamah, Nebraska).  PCDC and the Chamber were able to work together to bring these interns to our community.  We are excited to have them, and ask you to help make them feel welcome in our community!

We are excited that our community will benefit from the leadership and creative thinking of all of these young ladies!

NEBRASKA NEWS

A long and difficult year still yields successes for Nebraska lawmakers

(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com reports that as Nebraska lawmakers wrapped up an often contentious 90-day session last week, they "left for the 2014 session ... tax changes, Medicaid expansion, state aid to K-12 schools and water management."  Speaker of the Legislature Greg Adams is quoted as saying: "It was difficult because we took on difficult issues. And we'll take on difficult issues next year."  Regarding the tax study that will be conducted over the interim, state Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala said "the governor is correct in seeking tax reductions, not just tax changes. ... 'If taxes don't go down, what's the difference?' Schilz said."  Read more.

Neb. revenue receipts in May below projections

(AP/HastingsTribune.com) - The AP reports that "Nebraska's net state revenue dipped below projections in May, but is still above the amount expected for the fiscal year that ends on July 1."  The state's "net receipts in May totaled $339 million, less than 2% below the state forecast of $345 million. ... Net individual income and sales-and-use tax receipts were above projections, while net corporate and miscellaneous were below."  According to the story, net general fund receipts for the current fiscal year "were nearly $3.7 billion, almost 8% above the certified forecast of $3.4 billion," as issued by the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board.  Read more.

Four state senators consider running for governor

(Omaha World-Herald) -- Omaha.com reports that "with the end of this year's legislative session," at least four state senators have "announced that they were considering possible runs for statewide office: Democrat Steve Lathrop of Omaha, Republican Bob Krist of Omaha, Republican Tom Carlson of Holdrege and Brad Ashford of Omaha, who is registered as an independent."  Among other possible contenders for governor is former state Sen. Mike Flood, who "announced a run last year but dropped out after his wife, Mandi, was diagnosed with breast cancer.  But he and others have said her prognosis has improved and he is again contemplating making a run."  Read more.
