Obama delays health reform law's employer mandate until 2015

 

The Obama administration has delayed a key mandate in the sweeping federal health reform law, meaning businesses won't be penalized next year if they don't provide health insurance to their workers.

 

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), companies with 50 or more employees were required to provide minimum benefit plans to their workers or face fines of up to $3,000 per employee. Read More  

Gay marriage rulings trigger big changes to HR

 

The Supreme Court's decision to declare unconstitutional key provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act is expected to mean a major overhaul of federal rules affecting employee benefits administration and payroll operations.  For benefits managers, the ruling - striking down a key section of the hotly contested 1996 law that prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages - also means more confusion while they wait for more legal rulings and IRS rules to come. Maternity-related disability claims rise sharply

 

New long-term disability claims resulting from pregnancy and childbirth increased sharply by 24 percent in 2012, according to a report released by the Council for Disability Awareness.

Women made up the majority of new claims, in part due to maternity claims.
